Description:

In 1997, with dreamy Ozzie kiddos Silverchair at their commercial zenith and record labels seeing dollar signs, an unassuming pop-rock trio from Texas led by teenage singer-songwriter Ben Kweller sparked a bidding war. As the dust settled, Kweller's band Radish signed with Mercury and released Restraining Bolt; the stately New Yorker magazine weighed in with a profile; and the world had promptly rolled over and fell back to sleep. Sha Sha, Kweller's 2002 solo debut on Dave Matthews's ATO imprint, captures an understandably cynical but not entirely sour 20-year-old. While Sha Sha can be broadly described as melodic, somewhat rickety, frequently acoustic, piano-laced pop--think Ben Folds with less irony--there are some twisted shadings. "Walk on Me," with its propulsive beats and cascading piano line, is a whiny and wide-eyed plea for mercy to a nasty lover; "Wasted & Ready" is built on a series of preposterous rhyming couplets ("Sex reminds her of eating spaghetti / I am wasted but I'm ready") while "Harriet's Got a Song" sticks to a hard-soft formula, alternating between white-hot guitar licks and little tinkling bits. None of the tracks on Sha Sha screams megahit, but Kweller acquits himself as a unique songwriter nonetheless. --Kim Hughes

2Mini gems inside averageness  Jan 21, 2009
I am sure in many years to come Mr Kweller will look back to this album and say " well it had a few good points but it was not the best I did"

There are a few great tracks- the rest so so. Its either a shame someone didn't have the balls to point this out before he released it as when its good its great and he might just have an unbelievable album inside him. I honestly believe if he takes more time and gets better at picking the good tunes he will be a household name. until then its hit or miss on each track. There's no in between.
Save your cash as you will buy ity and not play it again.

5Different in a world of endless clones  Jan 15, 2009
Simply put, Ben Kweller's music is fun, easy to relate to, and easy to sing along to. If you are sick of today's overproduced flash-in-the-pan, making CD's just because they're pretty singers, then you should try Kweller's quirky, indie-rock, sometimes a little pop, sometimes a little country sound. After picking up my first Ben Kweller CD just on a whim at a music store, I went out and found all the rest and have been a fan ever since.

5Great album  Nov 15, 2007
Anyone who wrote a bad review just does not understand music. This guy in ultra talented. He touch all aspects of rock music. Hard like nirvana but done with such a touch I am blown away!!! Great song writer. If you like music and can understand good song writing. Get it, listen to it 3 times then you wont stop listening its that good!! Highlights for me include "Make it up", " Lizzy" " wasted and ready" and my favorite "walk on me" . I think we should meditate.

5This puppy is golden!  Sep 07, 2007
I remember years ago when I first purchased Sha Sha. I saw the video for "wasted and ready" (probably the only time it was ever aired on tv) and I thought wow, I have to hear more of this guy! After listening to the album, it changed my life. I can't think of a single musician who has affected me the way BK has. I don't exactly know what it is, but his music has this charm to it. And not only that but the album is diverse. He can go from syncopated piano pop to all out head bangin' fist in the air rock anthem, to pickin' and a singin' folk song, to memorable love ballad. It's all here, and waiting for your ears. You'll be glad you bought this album!

5Sha Sha  Jun 05, 2007
Sha Sha is Ben Kweller's full length debut on ATO Records, and demonstrates the subtle skill and talent that Kweller has for songwriting. In between tossing off clever lyrics (take a listen to the opening track `How It Should Be (Sha Sha)'), irresistible melodies (`Wasted and Ready,'`Falling') and touching ballads (`In Other Words,' `Lizzy'), Kweller gives us a real self portrait that seems very hard not to like. Overall, Sha Sha shows a true artist and a talent who doesn't receive nearly the attention he deserves.
