Description:

"A road map for investing that I have now been following for 57 years."
--From the Foreword by Warren E. Buffett

First published in 1934, Security Analysis is one of the most influential financial books ever written. Selling more than one million copies through five editions, it has provided generations of investors with the timeless value investing philosophy and techniques of Benjamin Graham and David L. Dodd.

As relevant today as when they first appeared nearly 75 years ago, the teachings of Benjamin Graham, “the father of value investing,” have withstood the test of time across a wide diversity of market conditions, countries, and asset classes.

This new sixth edition, based on the classic 1940 version, is enhanced with 200 additional pages of commentary from some of today’s leading Wall Street money managers. These masters of value investing explain why the principles and techniques of Graham and Dodd are still highly relevant even in today’s vastly different markets. The contributor list includes:

  • Seth A. Klarman, president of The Baupost Group, L.L.C. and author of Margin of Safety
  • James Grant, founder of Grant's Interest Rate Observer, general partner of Nippon Partners
  • Jeffrey M. Laderman, twenty-five year veteran of BusinessWeek
  • Roger Lowenstein, author of Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist and When America Aged and Outside Director, Sequoia Fund
  • Howard S. Marks, CFA, Chairman and Co-Founder, Oaktree Capital Management L.P.
  • J. Ezra Merkin, Managing Partner, Gabriel Capital Group .
  • Bruce Berkowitz, Founder, Fairholme Capital Management.
  • Glenn H. Greenberg, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Chieftain Capital Management
  • Bruce Greenwald, Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Finance and Asset Management, Columbia Business School
  • David Abrams, Managing Member, Abrams Capital

Featuring a foreword by Warren E. Buffett (in which he reveals that he has read the 1940 masterwork “at least four times”), this new edition of Security Analysis will reacquaint you with the foundations of value investing—more relevant than ever in the tumultuous 21st century markets.

2Be Careful With This Version  Nov 04, 2009
I read the 1934 version from a local library and ordered this version for my library. But as someone else has pointed out the 6th edition is not the full 1940 version. There are actually 11 chapters & the appendix to the 1940 edition "missing" from the book and, using the CD, you can download them from the McGraw Hill website. However if you buy this book and want to read it you will either 1) have to print the missing material or 2) have your computer handy. I was unable to find a PDF of the full 1940 version on the CD or available for download. Also the print quality is uneven, especially towards the end of the book in my copy (some pages are darker than others).

4The Book That Everyone Knows, But Few Have Actually Read  Sep 22, 2009
Mark Twain says that, "It's a classic... something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read." With that tone, the above title is a comment from Martin Whitman (of Third Avenue Funds) in which he noticed that everyone talks about Graham & Dodd and the value approach, but very few have actually read the text.

Yes, Security Analysis is a classic in the investment world and as an investor you are better off for having read it. Will it make you famous or rich, No. But reading it will both protect you from market fallacy that tends to occur over and over again, and also will teach you how to take advantage of that fallacy when it does occur.

As other reviewers have indicated, this is an abridged 1940 edition of what Buffett calls the 1940 Edition (2nd Edition) as the Classic of all the editions. As Buffett also states in the forward, one of his most prized possessions is the marked up 1934 edition in preparation of the 1940 release. He then goes on to say he has read it at least four (4) times.

Though it is abridged, all the original material is available as this Sixth Edition comes with both a CD and McGraw Hill allows you to download other chapters too. Also the contributors with commentaries for each the VIII parts from Seth Klarman to Thomas Russo round out this fine compilation for the next generation of Graham & Dodd value investors. Worth the purchase if you want to read it and not just place it on the shelf, read the classic :)

5Learn from the Teacher who taught Warren Buffett  Aug 12, 2009
Every serious value investor has to read this book. If you are a beginning investor, this book is probably not the best place to start, but sooner or later, every investor should have a copy. Some of the information is a little outdated because a lot has changed since 1934, but still, good investing is good investing. If Warren Buffett learned from Benjamin Graham, we should all find something valuable in this book.
