5Classic Soundgarden  Feb 13, 2009
This is a combination of Soundgarden's first two ep's. So first off this album is pure hardcore rock. If you listen to Soundgarden at all, you should check it out. If your one of those casual fans who just like Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, then check out Badmotorfinger or A-Sides, unless you like a more hardcore raw experimental sound. Chris Cornell gives a great performance, and while it's not his best, he really shines on tracks Hunted Down, Tears To Forget, Nothing To Say, and Fopp.

On their first releases they were obviously heavily influenced by Zeppelin, Sabbath, and 70's rock, and still finding their sound. They didn't really settle into their sound until Louder Than Love. You can definitely hear traces of their sound throughout many tracks, but it wasn't until Louder Than Love that they really had their own sound. While Louder Than Love is a lot like Ultramega OK in it's hard, heavy, raw sound, it's a more defined and solid record and you really begin to hear the Soundgarden sound.

The first four songs on Screaming Life are worth the purchase alone. They are some of Soundgarden's best early songs. Hand of God and Fopp are also among my favorites. So if you want to hear pure, heavy rock, check this out. It's very hard to find, but I just ordered it off Amazon and it was in my hands in 3 days. So anyway if you are a pretty big Soundgarden fan, you already know about songs like Hunted Down, Nothing To Say, Hand of God, and you already have this or will eventually have it. But if you are new to Soundgarden, I suggest you pick up Badmotorfinger, then Louder Than Love, then SuperUnknown.

5Whoe,I can't believe Chris never had a problem with his voice everytime he scream sings on his albums...  Dec 15, 2008

5Awesome CD...  Jul 20, 2008
I already had the cassette, and finally found the CD on here...I love this CD. I love Soundgarden & absolutely adore CC. If you're a fan, I recommend this CD.

4A good buy for Soundgarden fans. Not so much for non-fans.  Feb 12, 2008
This is some good music. It is much more stripped-down than their later stuff, but the songwriting is still strong. The song quality is inconsistent, though. Very raw, it probably wont appeal to most people.

4worth checking out if you're a fan  Apr 16, 2007
Released in 1990, this compilation consists of Soundgarden's first two EPs, "Screaming Life" (1987) and "Fopp" (1988). While at this early stage the band had yet to really hit its stride and evolve into a truly great band, early Soundgarden is definitely worth checking out if you're a fan. While the songwriting on these two EPs isn't as tight or memorable as their later albums, these early works are still quite good. One can hear a bit of the Stooges and Sabbath in Soundgarden and earlier Soundgarden in particular. Along with Tad, Green River and Mudhoney, early Soundgarden exemplifies the "grunge" sound: distorted guitars, intense drumming, and "the fuzz." Although Soundgarden was always a bit more metallic than some of their Seattle peers. And while these two EPs are angrier, more aggressive and unadulterated than Soundgarden's later work, the band knew how to write good hooks even at this early stage.
