 Superb Single, Video for the Tricksters at this late stage of their careers. Jun 01, 2006
Was very happy to see Rick, Brad and
Rob put W.U.W.A.M behind them. What
a disaster! They did do well on Let-
terman and Leno's shows, though. Great
concert on VH1 for '97's Cheap Trick
as well!

SHOULDA BEEN A SMASH Feb 19, 2003
I was living in Austin Texas the summer this came out and heard it on the local radio. I was stunned at the fact that A) They had new music out, and B) It was like a long lost friend had returned. Had it not been for the dissolution of Red Ant Records, this could have been a major single. Wistful and harmonic, with the same elegant Beatle harmonies they'd perfected in the early days. Maybe one of these days it will show up on a soundtrack to a hit movie and get the royal chart topping placement it deserved back then. Get "Say Goodbye" before it winds up in collector's sales for inflated prices. And then get CHEAP TRICK '97 too.

This song first of all is no ballad. When I think of a ballad I think of sappy lyrics. This song has no sappy lyrics. I would say if anything it is mid tempo and it has a nice little bite attatched to it. The slide guitar solo is pure George Harrison, and Tom Petersson's bass line brings Paul Macartney to mind. But it is Robin Zanders vocals that are the real treat here. He is not trying to show off his vocal prowess, by hitting high notes. It is more subtle, and restrained. As for the production, it is awsome. The reverb on Zander's vocals has a nice warmth that had been missing from many Trick records for a long time. The guitars sound nice and crisp, as does Bun E'e drumming. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Cheap Trick got to co-produce this song as well as the 1997 album that "Say Goodbye," comes from. Put all preconceived notions you have about late era Cheap Trick. This single only scratches the surface of their 1997 album. They have still got the goods, and you should check their goods out. Sadly, all their albums could have been this good if only they could have had creative control. Oh well we can't live in the past only learn from it.

Another perfectly written Zander/Nielsen ballad! Dec 14, 1999
Brilliant in it's simplicity, the boy's introspective take as they search the embers of another heartbreak. Highly recommended, though most of you will feel a tinge of sad reflection as we have all been there before.
