2an ADULT review  Nov 20, 2009
I am very curious what the ages are of the people writing the 4 and 5 star reviews of this album. I really like the mix of genres this album has but the majority of the lyrics are CRINGE-worthy. I can't believe the lyrics came from a mid-20's aged man. It almost seems like Max is just catering to the 15 year old angst ridden kids out there. A few of the songs on this album are decent (I actually like Young, Dumb, And Stung) and the Kings of Leon jab was funny. I loved ...Is A Real Boy but since then it's been completely downhill. I doubt he will ever write another Alive With The Glory Of Love or I Want To Know Your Plans. I guess I just feel like his lyrics seem fake. Say Anything has made no progression since ...Is A Real Boy. I did hear the Secret Origins demo CD which was better. He cut out the dumb "The Pills I Ate For Breakfast" line from I Hate Everyone on the demo which I liked. Yeah Yeah Max, we know. You're so messed up and medicated. Grow up.

5Quite amazing.  Nov 13, 2009
I am a MAJOR Say Anything fan. This album has made my life better since I downloaded it last night.

Holds true to Say Anything Max Bemis style, but introduces a new approach to their sound by adding new beats and instrument usage. I especially love the use of a 40s-romantic-Prom slow dance-ish intro to the song "Property".

My favorite songs on the album so far are: "Hate Everyone", "Do Better", "Less Cute", "Crush'd", "Property", and "Death for My Birthday"

I LOVE IT!

4Good Album in a New Direction  Nov 10, 2009
I consider myself a big Say Anything fan, loved "...Is A Real Boy" and "In Defense of the Genre", but this newest album just doesnt have the same energy as either of Say Anythings previous two albums. In "...Is A Real Boy" you really got a look into Max Bemis' mind after a nervous breakdown while being treated to a truly unique mix of songs ranging from drugs, lonliness, love, sex, and hypocritical social society. "In Defense of the Genre" takes a left turn from where "Is A Real Boy" left off, but it doesn't stray far. Being a double disc it does contain some filler, but the majority is amazingly written by a newly sobered Max.

Now with regards to the new album, I can' help but feel their self titled new album "Say Anything" is appropriate, because if your expecting the same Say Anything from before, you'll be in for a suprise (not a bad one at that). If Say Anything took a sharp left from "...Is A Real Boy" to "In Defense of the Genre", their newest album took a sharp right from where they last left off. Max is now happily married and is no longer the lonely, sex craved, heartbroken songwriter, but one bursting with new emotions, which clearly shows in the new songs. But don't get me wrong, listen to some of the lyrics, and you'll realize it's still Say Anything, just a different side (one that reminds me personally of Say Anything's earliest work, like Baseball and Menorah/Majora).

Overall, a good upbeat album that takes the band in a new direction that will quickly grow on the listener if they give it the chance.

5Awesome Album  Nov 07, 2009
I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. I really liked "...Is A Real Boy." "In Defense of the Genre" still hasn't really grown on me, but I don't know if I've really given it a good chance. However, this new album, just like "...Is A Real Boy" instantly satisfies. Regardless, I think if you liked either Say Anything album, you will like this one. The songs are catchy enough, but still full of sarcastic, witty lyrics and great musicianship. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

5Whoa!  Nov 06, 2009
This came out of nowhere! In Defense of the Genre was a letdown(imo) but this new self titled album blows me away. Best rock record of 2009 hands down. Sort of like Deja Entendu from Brand New,... when you first heard it you KNEW it was going to be a classic. Thats what this is.
