Description:

On the evidence of Rockin' the Suburbs, Ben Folds's decision to jettison the two-piece Five that had backed him on four largely excellent albums has not resulted in any significant shift in trajectory. The Ben Folds Five were only getting better, gradually discovering the confidence not to hide their musical uniqueness (there have been too few piano-led power trios) and lyrical intelligence behind undergrad Barenaked Ladies-style gags. Songs like "Mess" and "Brick" signaled an extraordinary new songwriting talent worthy of comparison to Folds's obvious idols, Elvis Costello and Paul Simon. Only this album's title track harkens back to Folds's fondness for comedy, and it is by far the weakest track here. The rest is mournful, reflective, and, at best, quite magnificent. Folds's hymns to his family, "Still Fighting It" and "The Luckiest" are shot through with an honesty that's rare in alternative rock. The acerbic essence of character sketches such as "Carrying Cathy," "Losing Lisa," and "Zak & Sara" are leavened with a generous compassion. Folds's second solo effort is his best album yet. The remainder of his career must be anticipated with equal parts expectation and impatience. --Andrew Mueller

5Rockin' Your Suburbs  Nov 05, 2009
The breakup of Ben Folds Five was certainly a sad affair. Exhausted from touring for an album that didn't get much support from critics and especially fans, they decided to go their seperate ways, with Robert Sledge pursuing the now-defunct Internation Orange, and Darren Jessee head-manning the successful Hotel Lights project. Thankfully this has not resulted in a drop-off in quality from Mr. Folds' songwriting. In fact, Rockin' The Suburbs finds Ben Folds at the top of his songwriting game. Sure, the album may not be as "fun" (in the traditional sense) as some of the earlier stuff from the 'Five,' with such things as those trademark backup harmonies being absent for the most part. Make no mistake though, these are some of the most well-rounded songs Folds has ever written, as they are rich in melody as well as emotion. It's a great mix of poignant character sketches and up-tempo pop-rock. Sure, if I had my way the album would be arranged slightly differently for better flow, but that's just a personal preference--Rockin' The Suburbs absolutely shines as a proper debut to Ben Folds' solo career.

4heartachingly beautiful & poignant  Jun 15, 2009
Ben Folds is an incredible songwriter & storyteller. Some of his songs are so intensely moving and heart-breaking. For me, one of those songs is "Carrying Cathy," which is on this CD. It makes me break down and cry every time I listen to it. Ben has the ability to write the kind of songs that just reach down into your core and strum the deepest chords of your emotions.
Another favorite is "The Luckiest" - it's an amazing love song with such a gorgeous melody. Absolutely beautiful. I love the metaphors/stories he uses to describe how much in love he is with this other person. They are anything but typical and cliche.
"Still Fighting It" is another wonderful song-- it has such a bittersweet but beautiful, touching sentiment.
"Fired" is another favorite-- quirky and upbeat, and the line at the end never fails to make me laugh.
I HIGHLY recommend this album.

5Great CD!  Jan 06, 2009
I purchased this CD a few months ago. It has been hard for me to remove it from my CD player. Both my husband and I really like it. The songs are catchy, well written, and a little quirky at times. I purchased the CD for "the Luckiest", but have fallen in love with "Zak and Sara". Really fun and refreshing!

5Timeless!  Jan 06, 2009
My daughter was getting married and just before the ceremony, they still had not decided on a song. I went through my CDs in my car and found this album from 2001. I remembered how much I loved this song. Just before the ceremony, I told the groom's cousin to put #12 on as my daughter walked in....EVERYONE says the song is the most beautiful love song they have ever heard. They all keep asking me who sings it and how can they get a copy. There is not a cooler love song out there. Ben Folds is amazing.....Kelley in Canada

5ben is rockin my suburb  Aug 19, 2008
I love his voice, lyrics, piano talent, and just the way he combines rock and jazz and other things I can't think of names for. Seriously if you have never heard of ben folds before just listen to him please. He is my favorite pianist. I was lucky enough to see him live, and now I experience all the music with a new perspective. And if you play piano, I recommend also purchasing the piano book for this album.
