Terrific debut sounds extremely good on CD nice mastering job... Aug 22, 2009 With "Chuck E.'s in Love" Rickie Lee Jones became an overnight sensation. Although she didn't have any other huge hits from her later albums Jones continues to make terrific music. "Pirates" the second album is more ambitious and certainly less "pop" mainstream that the first and, perhaps, on a song-per-song basis a better album but "Rickie Lee Jones" manages the difficult balancing act of creating radio friendly pop songs and jazz/blues inflected classics.
The original Warner CD sounds terrific. Could it be improved? Well maybe. The horns are a bit thin sounding but the ringing tone of acoustic and electric guitars as well as the bass all sound great courtesy of a brilliant original mastering job by engineer Lee Herschberg. For $8 you can't go wrong with this CD as it captures much of the warmth of the original vinyl and the detailed sound as well.
The only improvement that I can see is if Audio Fidelity or Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs elected to do this fine album as an SACD similar to "Pirates" her second album.
The CD booklet has the original lyrics and full album credits.

Teenage classic Aug 18, 2009 I was 14 years old, when this album was issued. My 3 year older sister bought this album immediatly and no matter how young I was, I was mesmerized right away. You have to admit it, her singing is a little different.
This album is simply outstanding. The songs are like folk songs, never too complicated or far fetched, but rather simple and straight from the heart. My 3 favorite songs are coolsville, the last chance to texaco and night train. I fact, 2 months ago I did take the night train to Goa in India and guess what song I was playing? Right. It never sounded more beautiful as it did 2 months ago, even after 30 years. Can bring tears to your eyes. Afterwards I gave this CD as a present to the Indian friends who invited us to Goa, just as a thank you.
In 2004 a dream came through when I was Ricky Lee Jones at the North Sea Jazz Festial in The Hague. For days in advance I felt excited as a boys dream was coming tue. The concert had a little bit of a slow start, but it turned out to be great. The same approach, simply, no pretentions, straight from the heart with this particular enchanting singing. RLJ kept the audience in a grip, especially during the many moments she was singing solo or supported by only her own guitar playing. What a night! The ticket of that concert is lying next to my computer as I am writing this review.
So, Mrs. Jones, in case you would read this, thank you for this beautiful album. Don't ask me how or why, but the music has become more and more important to me during the last 30 years and will continue to be so. For those who are considering buying this album, I hope my enthousiasm has helped you in making that decision. It is a true gem.

GREAT FAN OF RICKIE LEE JONES Feb 08, 2009 I HAVE THE ORIGINAL IN RECORD FORM AT ANOTHER HOME, BUT I NEEDED SOME OF THAT SOUND HERE. THE CD I BOUGHT ON LINE IS NOT SO GOOD. THE FIRST FEW MINUTES HAVE A SHHH SOUND ALONG THE MUSIC, BUT I DID'NT PAY THAT MUCH AND MOST OF MY FAVS ARE NICE TO HEAR AGAIN. I'LL KEEP BUYING FROM ALL E RETAILERS, BUT I WILL START TO RETURN SOMETHINGS, IF THEY MATTER.
Everyone should own this disc! Jan 07, 2009 I know she continues to have her followers and rightfully so. I always give her recordings a chance because of how much I like this first one. "The Horses" is also great but this one simply gets the most air time in my household. All of the songs have a deeply personal tone sung from the heart. My favorite is "Young Blood" and the lyrics to "Last Chance Texaco" is brilliant. I can't imagine anyone doing a cover of any of her songs. Only she can sing them the way she does. Her music is as unique as her name.
