Too bad they broke up. Apr 10, 2009 A unique band that mixes some quirky music and lyrics. Its a fun album to listen to, but don't get too attached. Totally worth the few dollars it cost to get the cd.
Great album Aug 11, 2006 I loved this album upon first listen. Great composition, fantastic vocals, lyrically impressive and so on. This band doesnt have as much exposure as they should, but if you buy it you will like it. I for one, am addicted.
Where is peeping Tommy? Aug 10, 2006 Great band!!! Love the ecletic sound they have, and the CD is a great addition to my collection!!!
Solid Debut LP Aug 03, 2006 I was first drawn into Agent Sparks by their single, "Polly Anne." I was very impressed with the song and felt that these guys had their own unique sound. Their debut album, "Red Rover," by far exceeded my expectations that their single had built for me. After listening to the album in its entirety, I realized that "Polly Anne," as great of a song as it is, was not the strongest on the album. The energy brought with "Face the Day" and "Mr. Insecurity" left me pretty blown away. The whole album was quite accessible and the songs seemed to group well together.
With all the Pixies comparisons floating around I feel that I must also address this issue. Yes, it is an amazing compliment to put on someone, but at the same time, Pixies fans may be offended that a new, up-and-coming band, would be compared to their indie-rock gods. To this I say; of course they don't touch the Pixies. There are few bands that could ever be considered on the same playing field as them. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't give Agent Sparks a listen, because being a Pixies fan myself and initially scoffing after I heard such blasphemy, I heard "Polly Anne" and was put back in my place. These guys are for real.
So, don't worry about thinking that these guys are looking to de-throne the Pixies, they won't. But, I'm telling you, go check out their LP and you'll fall in love with these guys.

A Disappointing Surprise Jul 24, 2006 I was instantly hooked upon my first listen of Agent Sparks' debut EP, "Not So Merry," and had anticipated their full-length release ever since. There was just something about this band. Combining styles from the late 80's/early 90's alternative scene, with something new and bold, it just seemed like the perfect band, really. It also didn't hurt that singer/guitarist Ben Einziger was a founding member of Audiovent and the brother of Mike Einziger, the guitarist for Incubus -- who also produces Agent Sparks. But with "Red Rover," the band's first full length album, something went very wrong.
My first listen, I kept searching and skipping around, looking for something to hit me. Nothing did. Since then, I've tried this album countless times, only to be met with frustration. It's not that the music is bad, but the songs just lack focus and/or a point. Lyrically, the songs are just goofy, and Agent Sparks come across as a really bad Pixies/Flaming Lips ripoff, as opposed to before, when they used those influences to their advantage. Nothing here really captures the "sparks" of the EP. "Polly Anne," "Face The Day" and "Funny Foolish" come close, but alas, the album is a loss. Basically, it seems like the band went into the studio, recorded whatever came into their collective brain first, and put it out under the name "Red Rover." Coming from a band that had it going for them so well, this comes along as a massive disappointment. I give it three stars, because I know what the band is capable of, and perhaps their next effort will be a much better one.
