Description:

Before Freddie Hubbard signed with CTI Records in 1970, he was already considered one of the most brilliant jazz trumpeters in the world. RED CLAY, his debut album on the label, is an exceptional set of plugged-in hard bop fused with funk - and reportedly the album he considers his best. Joining him on five of the six cuts, is a crack quintet featuring longtime colleagues Joe Henderson and Herbie Hancock, on tenor saxophone and keyboards respectively. The final number, a previously unissued, extended live jam on the title tune, finds Hubbard fronting an all-star septet that includes such fellow CTI stars as George Benson and Stanley Turrentine.

3 1/2

It's not as immediately special like the title track is, but does maintain a soulfully funky vibe throughout, a quality itself rarely integrated into the jazz medium.

4Cool Freddie !  Aug 30, 2009
I've always watched the cool demeanor of Freddie Hubbard in sheer amazement. From the flowing delivery of his solo on Quincy Jones's "Killer Joe" to Hub-Tones's progressive push. I had an older sister who married a local radio DJ in 1969 and he would bring promotional copies of albums over and hand them out to all. Red Clay along with Hush n Thunder by Yusef Lateef were the types of albums left over after my siblings grabbed up the popualr stuff of the time. So there I was a 10 year old with Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard and a close and play record player, what a combo.I think this formed my love of Jazz and Funk music which still ranks as my favorite musical genres even to this day. Title track "Red Clay" has all the mixture of Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock , Ron Carter and Lenny White coming together as one, and that's a beautiful thang indeed. Suite Sioux is another favorite along with Delphia, which takes me to another place. My son calls this album my "Dad thinks he's cool" album; and I can't agree with him more. I attended a local Jazz Fest this year and heard no mention of the passing of Freddie Hubbard through out the festival. So here's to you Freddie Hubbard RIP!

5Another beaut by Freedy and Herbie  Jun 06, 2009
On this gorgeous rocking and funky Jazz venture we find Freddie Hubbard with an all star cast including some of my faves: Herbie Hancock on Rhodes Piano, Ron Carter tearing it up on Bass, Lenny White grooving all day on the traps, and Joe Henderson on tenor sax.

The first track on this one is immediately accessible and will get your head bobbing. The tracks following are a good mix of soulful swinging standards and hard bop. This is definitely a great listen and you won't want to miss a minute of it.

To put a cherry on top, there is an alternate live version of the opening track, Red Clay, timing in at over 18 minutes. In this one Freddie and his new All-Star cast go to new heights and dimensions beyond the LP version.

On this number we find Hubbard doing virtuoso solos all over the place, pushing the boundaries of his instrument. Billy Cobham brings a deep pocket and an irresitable groove on the drums and rounding out the list are George Benson (guitar), Stanley Turrentine (tenor sax), Johnny Hammond (organ), Ron Carter (bass), and Airto Moreira (percussion).

This extra track makes this CD a must have for Jazz affecianodos and Rocker's alike!

Enjoy :)

5CLASSIC album, but c'mon Amazon...  Jan 22, 2009
...Really, who picks the 30-second clip for the previews of these tracks??? The preview of Red Clay has to be the worst example of poor choices I've ever heard. And that track is the highlight of this amazing album!! Somebody, please, fix that!!

This is jazz at its best. I remember first hearing his music on the famed radio station WHUR, early in the 1970's. One "listen" was all it took to hook me.

I remember walking into the One Step Down Lounge in DC, plunking some coins in the jukebox, and traveling throught the smoky haze of the bar and into the convoluted nuances of Hubbard's fine fine rythms. (Since OSD also had the volume turned up on their jukebox, most of the bar patrons almost jumped off their stools at the first few notes of Red Clay - LOL)

Hubbard's beautiful trumpet riffs were dark highways leading to a never-ending horizon at dawn, or a dark alley filled with secrets that whispered way up, beyond any confining walls, up into the mysterious constellations and late into the pre-dawn hours.

The heartbeat pulse of his rythm and the exceptional fluidity of tone, volume and syncopation lent a timeless, eternal richness to his work.

Freddie Hubbard, RIP -- I know there's a combo waiting Up there just for you.
