Description:

Director Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) tries gamely to recapture the exotic mysteries of spaghetti Westerns in this stylish but empty film, which stars Sharon Stone as a stranger who comes to the town of Redemption in time for an annual shooting contest. Her real motivations for being there are the stuff that might have found their way into a film by Sergio Leone--in fact, much of this film is a pastiche of Leone's greatest hits, including A Fistful of Dollars and Once upon a Time in America--but one can't quite believe Stone in the role. Gene Hackman gives a predictably solid performance as the town tyrant, and Leonardo DiCaprio is good as a lucky young gunslinger who gets to kiss the heroine. But not even the cast can help this failed project. Raimi brings a lot of razzle-dazzle to his camera work, but it doesn't make the film any more substantial. --Tom Keogh

5One of Raimi's Best Works  Mar 16, 2010
It's been noted, in a review of this very film, that all the great westerns seem to be written by people who have never set foot in America. Simon Moore delivers a script that is simple, maybe even a bit shallow, but one that rings true with mythic storytelling in a larger-than-life contest with fronteir legends.*

This is decidedly non-traditional in film style, with Sam Raimi at his best, and cinematography that should do well with the Blu Ray treatment. This film has my favorite Russell Crowe character, a solid turn from DiCaprio, great scene chewing from Hackman, and it made me actually like Sharon Stone, who manages to keep up with Eastwood's ghost and turn out a performance that really surprised me. The rest of the cast is stellar.

If you want a serious, character-driven Western like Unforgiven, this is movie will very much disappoint. This flick is, however, one of the best Western-style adrenaline rides, up there with The Good, The Bad, The Weird. IT has a quirky sense of humor, fun characters, a solid (if simple) story, and a beautiful combination of directing & editing.

*While all the characters are fictional, their personalities are classic frontier mythos, blown up way out of proportion, even further than Leone managed to do.

5The Quick and the Dead  Feb 21, 2010
Ellen, an unknown female gunslinger rides into a small, dingy and depressing prairie town with a secret as to her reason for showing up. Shortly after her arrival, a local preacher, Cort, is thrown through the saloon doors while townfolk are signing up for a gun competition. The pot is a huge sum of money and the only rule: that you follow the rules of the man that set up the contest, Herod. Herod is also the owner, leader, and "ruler" of the town. Seems he's arranged this little gun-show-off so that the preacher, who use to be an outlaw and rode with Herod will have to fight again. Cort refuses to ever use a gun to kill again and Herod, acknowledging Cort as one of the best, is determined to alter this line of thinking, even if it gets someone killed. This movie uses lot's of ingredients used in classic westerns. It does it in a fun way but it doesn't spoof the classic westerns in any way and it never becomes humorous or a parody that makes fun of the genre. This movie is filled with some unusual but great Sam Raimi like cinematography and tricks. Enjoy and pay attention to the story. It is just entertainment.

2A Leo Movie  Nov 29, 2009
Yes Leonardo DiCaprio again. Movie was watchable but you have to appreciate it for what it is, A Spaghetti Western. I got a few laughs and it was good to see Russell Crowe acting too. This movie was nothing spectacular but I would watch it again sometime, if only to see a younger Leo acting.
