Enlightenment Rock Jun 30, 2009 Some of my fondest memories of Army life were generated atop Mount Scott in Oklahoma (off base from Fort Sill). One of my friends had a battery-powered record player and frequently, we'd spend Saturday nights enjoying the Moodies performing A QUESTION OF BALANCE. It seemed the ultimate in mind-travel. I was very disappointed in the CD because of the "bonus" tracks. I felt they distracted from the experience of listening to this wonderfully thought-out concept album. Still, it's a fine piece of work.

A Question of Balance (remastered) May 14, 2009 The remastering brings forward sounds that were subtle on the original CD release (and vinyl album). It does create a new listening experience that all "Moodies" will enjoy, especially the bonus tracks.

Bass is not the problem-Distortion is.......! Feb 16, 2009 Okay-Nothing wrong here with the base-it sounds awesome through my Lifestyle 12 Series 2 System What does, and always has plagued this masterful recording is the inherent distortion riding throughout. I think what is happening is the closer we get to hearing the master tapes, the closer we get to the distortion, and it is now obvious (Listen to tortoise and the hare). As far as the 5.1 "Quad" mix-I have mixed emotions-some songs are better served by it than others, for the best try Melancholy Man-it is terrific, which leads me to another curiosity.
My system plays the center channel, with vocals, which is a contradiction of what others are saying. Of the bonus tracks, only two Question, and Dawning hold much interest, and show much difference to my ears-both are significantly different, and don't seem to be bothered by the distortion problem of the crossfaded tracks.Mike's # 1 is pleasant, but probably forgettable as well. I wonder if any one has ever considered releasing all the tracks non crossfaded-interesting possibility! All in all I would rate this version B+. I don't hear much difference in the standard CD layer. I have just heard better 5.1 mixes for comparisons outside of the Moodies catalogue try The Elton John mixes, particularly Madman or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. As far as the packaging and artwork, I feel it is spectacular, and to the one reviewer that said it looked cheap, you must have a different version than me.

My All-Time Favorite Moody Blues Album Nov 16, 2008 A Question of Balance has always been my favorite Moody Blues album. I love the "new" more live-sounding instrumentation. Of course, with the 2008 remastered version, the instruments are more clear and bright as well. One reviewer talked about straining to hear the bass on the new remaster of AQOB, but I must disagree. I think the bass is quite apparent, and I don't even have the rhythm ax of my stereo turned on, which would increase the bass. Another reviewer discussed the notion of distortion. Well, I don't hear it. One thing about the new remasters is that you don't need to have the volume cranked up nearly as much to enjoy the music. Anyway, as I've already mentioned in other reviews of the 2008 remasters, they are far superior to any previous release or remaster of the "core 7" Moody Blues!

Why don't they care? Feb 08, 2008 I've read all the reviews here on QOB and am amazed that no one has mentioned what truly destroys this album. DISTORTION! I'm a pro recording engineer and have always been aware this moodies album suffers terribly! The Master crossfaded tape is horribly distorted. It also seems down a tape generation. Most engineers just splice the crossfades 'tween tracks into the master takes to avoid degradation of the body of the song... but I'm not convinced that road was taken by evidance in the dull muddy overall sound. The song 'The Balance' is absolutely destroyed with distortion!
If you listen to the bonus tracks on this sacd release (non-crossfaded full versions) you will here a major improvment in fidelity and NO DISTORTION! The bass is clean and round and all things are musch more well defined. If they cared about this record they would re-assemble it using these pre crossfaded versions and do the crossfades digitally..It needs to be rescued!!!!I've bought this album way too many times to be cheated like this again! Now that I know the clarity is there but they won't make it right! I'm disappointed and even pissed that they keep serving this fine wine in a old dirty plastic cup! Why don't they care???
