Portrait: The Music Of Dan Fogelberg from 1972 to 1997 Oct 27, 2009 This four CD retropective of Dan Fogelgberg's music from 1972 to 1997 is the most comprehensive collection of his works that I have ever found. For those who have followed Dan's career from its inception to those who are just now discovering his music, this compilation is a must-have. It is an especially meaningful collection, as Dan passed on in 2007. Dan himself selected all of the tracks, which were culled from his major albums. A booklet accompanies this retrospective which has a well-written detailed bio of Dan by Paul Zollo, and Dan's personally written liner notes. As you listen to this collection of Dan's best works you understand the depth of talent he possessed as a singer, musician, songwriter, arranger and producer, and the true beauty of his music. Dan was largely a private person, but his music provides a look into the man himself.
Awesome box set Sep 15, 2009 Dan's songs here are beyond criticism. what makes this set special is the superb remastering, clear & not overly loud. the reordering of the songs in 4 thematic discs gives a fresh experience in hearing these songs. a great overview, but i consider this a supplement to the individual lps for any serious fan.

Absolute MUST HAVE Apr 09, 2009 This is an absolute MUST HAVE for any Dan Fogelberg fan. You can get into bidding wars or just buy it for whatever the going price is...but BUY IT. You won't regret it. The four disc set contains some of Dan's most popular and best known songs, but also contains three previously unreleased songs that quickly became my favorites; Don't Lose Heart, Mountains to the Sea and Song for a Carpenter. If you think the music's good, wait until you see the liner insert! It is filled with pictures of Dan as well as Dan's thoughts and inspirations behind the songs. It is a MUST HAVE that you'll treasure forever!

Almost perfect Feb 22, 2009 A very good overview of Dan's work over a period of three decades. The choice of themes for the CD's is debatable. He could have opted for 'The seventies', 'the eighties' and so on, but also for 'love songs', 'eco songs' etcetera. As it is, some tunes are out of place: 'As the raven flies' is not rock 'n roll, and a good rocking song like 'Language of love' ends up on 'The hits' because it was a hit! As for the song selection: well anybody will feel that his or her favourite has been left out. So do I: I agree with one reviewer that 'Place in the world for a gambler' should have been included, preferably the live version from 'Greetings from the west'. Dan liked to start an album off with a short instrumental to set the general atmosphere, followed by a longer song. Here we have 'Tullamore Dew-Phoenix', wich I think is inferior to 'Aspen-These days'. By the way, I think the album Phoenix is over represented - it wasn't that good.
The booklet is well crafted and informative, although it is a little boring to learn that almost every track on 'Portrait' was Dan's personal favourite.

A terrific CD box-set by a magnificent musician!, May 07, 2008 I ordered this CD box-set 4 years ago and I'm definitely glad that I did! I've been a fan of Dan Fogelberg's since 1983 and he's my most favorite non-heavy metal musician, even though he's no longer with us. I definitely love this CD box-set for 4 reasons: The attractively, terrific-looking case that the set comes in, The booklet that comes with it, offering a bio of Dan and liner notes to each song, all 62 songs from "Part Of The Plan" to "Ever On", and the fact that each CD has it's own theme. Disc 1 is titled "Hits" which are songs that got lots of radio airplay, Disc 2 is called "Ballads" which aren't well-known, except to the most loyal Dan Fogelberg fans (my personal favorite is the title track to "Nether Lands" because the beat of the music & the lyrics are so beautiful), Disc 3 is called "Rock and Roll" which covers that side of him, and Disc 4 is called "Tales & Travels" which talks about places that Dan's been to. I love Dan Fogelberg for 9 reasons: the beat of the music & lyrics to all of his songs, his voice, the fact that he cared about the wilderness & that people should keep their heritage, he was very talented and sang a variety of types of music, whenever I listen to his music, it puts me in a good mood and it also makes me think of my mom (God rest her soul) because she was a Dan Fogelberg fan, herself, and she was the one who got me interested in Dan Fogelberg in '83. She had 5 of his albums: Nether Lands, Twin Sons Of Different Mothers, Phoenix, The Innocent Age, and his greatest hits album. Also, in '87, we both saw him in concert and he was amazing! To sum it up in one word, this box-set is terrific! This is a must for all Dan Fogelberg fans or to anyone who loves music, in general. So, in closing, I recommend that you buy this set, because, believe me, you'll LOVE it!
