3Less than perfect  Nov 19, 2009
I was really looking forward to this album, but unfortunately it is less than mediocre. I don't think it deserves a 3 star rating, but 2 stars is a little too harsh. It's more like a 2.5 stars. I like Carrie; I really do. However, there are only 2 songs on the whole album that I really like. A big disappointment and not worth the $10 I paid for it. Don't waste your money.

4Stop shouting!  Nov 18, 2009
Carrie Underwood's third album occupies much the same terrain as her previous two. That means it's high quality pop/country with at least half a dozen potential radio hits. If you're a country purist, you'll find little joy in Underwood, but as I'm not, this suits me fine!

Lead single and opener, 'Cowboy Casanova' is a great start. No wonder it's sitting at #1 as I write. It's powerful, hooky and a helluva lot of fun. Max Martin's 'Quitter' is another smash in the making and is one of the best cuts on the CD. 'Undo It', 'Songs Like This' and 'Unapologize' are less effective than the first two tracks but radio should love them anyway.

Ballads are well catered for with possibly the standout being 'Temporary Home'. Now Underwood has a very strong voice. Trouble is, like most modern singers, she feels the need to show it off on almost every track. At full pelt, her voice isn't actually that pleasant to listen to! It takes on shrill, nasal quality that can become hard on the ears. 'Temporary Home' is all the better that for once she shows a little restraint. It's all too common for her to honk her way through the majority of her material, upbeat or otherwise, but on this track she puts in a lovely subtle performance.

I'm giving this album four stars because it's a great example of it's kind. It's the sort of album a veteran like Martina McBride should be making, if only anyone cared enough to send her some decent songs. As a vocalist, McBride is a thousand time better than Underwood, but because she's 'of a certain age', she's left only the barrel-scrapings of new songs.

I do feel I've been a bit hard on Carrie. She did co-write a good number of these songs and her vocal dexterity isn't in question. It's just that sometimes less is more...

Finally, another whinge of mine. Poor CD artwork. No wonder sales are down! If you buy 'Play On', don't bother looking for lyrics or a lavish booklet. All you get is a sh&%*y fold out sheet with hard-to-read credits and a few pictures of Underwood, who lets face it, as one of country current leading ladies, should be treated accordingly and given a CD package worthy of her stature.

1Her sister is better  Nov 18, 2009
It is only fitting that during a time when her sister releases her first ablum, Carrie has to go and try to one up her with this. I'm not saying that it isn't good in itself, I mean I don't agree with her buddhist belief system but thats beside the point. My biggest beef with Carrie is that Natasha Underwood doesn't get any credit as a beat box/folk artist. What other artists out there could make the song "Take me out to the ballgame" ghetto gangster rap and have it actually be cool? I love everything about Natasha Underwood except her relationship with Michael Moore, the liberal film maker. I don't think that they fit together at all. Other than that she is pretty great. I hope she makes more music using animal sounds and by banging pots together. That was VERY cutting edge to me.

1Her head has gotten to big :(  Nov 16, 2009
When I first heard Carrie on American Idol I thought she was a winner right off. Now I can't even listen to her because her voice is like fingernails being pulled accross a chalk board!! I think she has gotten such the "big head" that her voice is second in line now. I'm just glad she didn't win female vocalist this year...maybe this will bring her down a notch and she will get back to really singing.
