5Hell on Wheels  Sep 25, 2009
This artist is superlative and for whatever defects in recording a live concert-which i think are few-the pure energy of this outstanding drummer translates well and makes up for any asserted technical defects in this DVD-while I can appreciate that the bonus videos from the '80's are in stereo only because of the technology of the time -it sure would be nice for these to be put into the Dolby or DTS 5.1 or above surround format-when this is played on a blu rayplayer with HD it is amazingly crisp and clear-if anyone does not know the solo Phil Collins -this is definitely the place to start

3Pretty good but ditto the inconsistent audio  Aug 21, 2009
I'm not a huge fan, but the concert was generally enjoyable with a couple of songs being outstanding primarily due to the energy of everyone on stage. Some of the staging, while flamboyant and well-used, looked a bit contrived.

I share the irritation on the audio that others have mentioned. IT does not afflict every song but on a few songs it sounds like a drunk monkey was bouncing around with the levels constantly. It is incredibly annoying. I can't imagine why the producers would release the DVD with that low level of consistent quality.

If you want to see what a top notch music DVD looks and SOUNDS like, see Springsteen in Barcelona. The staging is much simpler with Springsteen but the DVD production values are excellent.

5Fantastic!!!  Apr 01, 2009
I love watching this DVD. I bought it for my father and I guess I am going to have to buy my own.

5WOOOOOOOOOW!!!!  Jan 28, 2009
I was in shock for 3 days after I first saw this DVD. Phil Collins was running all of the stage playing some drums and singing like it was the time of his life. Great songs collection with a few twists on them that make them better. Crowd is great! Paris! Stage was a solid design, lights were good (no Genesis) but it was the show and how he put it together that really makes this one a classic. Not to mention all the Interesting EXTRAS!!!

4A tight professional performance  Jan 06, 2009
Phil Collins' horn-powered group is tight and professional, and this 2-DVD set is an excellent value. Not only do you get a complete concert with surround sound and widescreen video, but you also get an 80% complete collection of Phil's videos and also a documentary. Unfortunately, the video clips must be accessed individually, and there isn't a way to watch the videos play as a continuous program.
Collins is backed by mostly the same instrument players who were heard on "Live and Loose in Paris", excepting that Bassist Leland Sklar returns, replacing Nathan East.
The set list focuses of the popular "No Jacket Required","But Seriously" & "Dance Into The Light" albums, though the few subsequent songs included cause the pace to briefly drag.
Collins seldom has adequate on-stage duet partners to re-create the Marylin Martins part on "Separate Lives" & the Philip Bailey part on "Easy Lover", and this show is no exception. On "Separate Lives", Collins(in this show) has a throaty,low-pitched, masculine-sounding African American woman to duet with, and while she's a skillful singer, she takes too many melodic and phrasing liberties with "Separate Lives". This lady, and a male background vocalist take turns trying to replace Philip Bailey on "Easy Lover", but Bailey's high falsetto notes are simply out of these singers' ranges, and they have no option but to sing the song quite differently. This is one area where Nathan East is missed. He could easily reproduce the Philip Bailey part, and with good reason:East co-wrote "Easy Lover".
There are very occasional moments during this show, where Collins' very highest notes sound slightly thinner or more nasal than in the past. Collins hits all the required notes(though in a few instances avoiding holding them for as long), but from the way Collins occasionally grimaces in the first half of the show, it is obvious that it is not as effortless to reach these high notes in his mid-50's as it was in his mid-30's.(in a subsequent Genesis reunion tour, Collins dropped the keys of most of the songs, de-tuning the songs as much as 3 keys)
Don't get me wrong, this is a generally excellent, well performed, recorded and filmed show, and the two-disc set is value packed, but if you don't have a Phil Collins DVD yet, I'd advise you to start with "Live and Loose in Paris", then buy this set. This is a fine farewell from Collins. It's good to quit at the top.
