A Ghostly Pirate Epic Nov 23, 2009 Whatever musical direction Nox Arcana pursues, they achieve their desired goal with a high degree of class and artistic originality, surpassing all other attempts by previous artists, creating an aural realm that completely surrounds the listener with music and sound effects to bring their visions to life. Phantoms of the High Seas is one of the band's most intricate and impressive offerings to date, embarking on a musical voyage filled with ghost ships and pirates. Tracks like "The High Seas," "Pirates," "Crossfire" and "Skull and Crossbones" are epic adventure anthems that sound like they would fit perfectly on the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack. "Maelstrom" and "The Fog Rolls In" are two moody sound effects pieces that will transport listeners to the edge of the haunted sea. The guitar ballad "Fate of the Tempest" offers a classic tale of pirates doomed to haunt the sea for eternity. Guest vocalist Ty Cook does a nice job delivering the woeful lyrics that warn listeners to "beware the whispering wind." The cd ends with a hidden track that is an homage to John Carpenter's ghost ship film "The Fog." The cd packaging even contains a hidden pirate quest for clever treasure hunters to decode. Every aspect of this cd is first rate.
A haunting pirate soundscape Nov 11, 2009 Nox Arcana always seems to be able to perfectly capture the mood of whatever theme they present, and this time they set sail for the high seas to explore the domain of pirates and ghost ships. There is a lot of diversity among the 21 tracks which range from haunting piano pieces like "Still Waters" and "Widow's Harbor," to inspirational orchestrated pieces like "Pirates," "Crossfire," "Against The Storm" and "Skull and Crossbones." Other standout tracks like "Black Sails" and "Trove Island" convey an exotic and mystical mood with harps and tribal drums, while "Fate of the Tempest" is a terrific guitar ballad about a ghostly pirate ship. Sound effects pieces like "Maelstrom" and "The Fog Rolls In" make you feel like you are surrounded by the ghostly sea and the narratives at the beginning and end of the CD really help create the perfect haunted atmosphere. As always, the CD booklet is filled with eerie artwork, an intriguing story, and a few hidden treasures as well. No pirate or scoundrel should be without this epic album! Highly recommended.
A superb and intensive orchestral experience! Nov 05, 2009 This is, without a doubt, one of the finest compendiums of haunting music - for augmenting a Halloween display, a themed party, or just to turn the lights down and just listen to. It's a sweeping orchestral sound augmented with just the right mix of effects and oration to give a complete mood and feel to the overall effect of the whole. You can easily listen to one track alone or just let the disk play and get swept up in the entire experience.
Powerful music that can be, at once, dominating and ominous, or soft and haunting with choral notes and just a hint of the etherial. The vocals, where actual spoken word is used, are eloquent, fitting and just add to the overall experience. The added track at the end brings a kind of close to the story told and, in and of iteself, offers a very chilling efffect to the grand scheme of the soundtrack.
I've purchased other Halloween CD's that have told stories, but I would have to say that "Phantoms of the High Seas" has got to be one of the best themed soundtracks I have ever heard. It's definately earned it's place our anual Halloween display and just an all around outstanding collection to just listen to.
For anyone with a love for intense, powerful and compelling music, I would have to say this is a must have. If you have a passion for pirates and ghost stories of the high seas...all the better!
It definately be worth the investment, sez I...arr.

boring Nov 03, 2009 I had high hopes for this but am greatly disappointed. I should have given it a longer listen before ordering. I only heard the first track and liked it. The problem is that it's almost entirely the same thing over and over. The coloration never changes. The arrangements are all very similar. After awhile it gets very boring. With an excellent theme idea and very good musicians, I expected better. I can't recommend this album.
Another treasure by Nox Arcana. Oct 21, 2009 With the release of their album Phantoms of the High Seas, Nox Arcana once again blows all competitors out of the water. This offering of audio delights marks the ninth album and unlike other bands with this many discs under their belt; this album is just as spectacular as their first and proves that Nox Arcana are not only highly talented but have the staying power to go with their continuous versatility.
You might think that a band whose albums have such varied themes as a haunted Edwardian manor (Darklore Manor) and dark fairy tales and nightmares (Grimm Tales) would stagnate at some point yet Phantoms invites listeners to set sail upon haunted seas prowled by ghostly ships and is done to such high caliber you can practically see the fog roll in and feel the water's spray upon your skin.
The opening track Dead Man Tell No Tales is narrated by Joseph Vargo and starts the journey off by sending goose bumps along your skin. The High Seas is an ominous offering that will have your heart rate flutter in fear. Crossfire conjures images of a fierce battle taking place and you can almost smell the gunpowder. Oblivion echoes with a haunting choir and Siren's Call is a beautiful track of an eerie enchantress. You'll feel the booming thunder of Maelstrom in your bones. The Fog Rolls In is filled with shivery whispers and leads into the pulse pounding Widow's Harbor.
Phantoms of the High Seas is a jewel to be had in the collections of Nox Arcana fans, and fans of pirates everywhere. Own it or walk the plank!
