you know this is 5 stars, very easily in fact Sep 24, 2009 The debut album from Peter, Paul and Mary. Who would have guessed they even HAD a debut album? Since they've been around for what feels like forever.
Is it just me or is Mary pretty attractive on the album cover? The kind of woman you want to hug, kiss, and cuddle. I can envision it happening, lol. Ah, I can only imagine being around when this album was released and bragging to all my friends that I actually got a chance to go on a date with Mary, haha.... and none of them believing a single word I said, lol.
All joking aside, it's amazing looking back at an album like this released.... what? 45 years ago? Man, really? Has it been THAT long? It's almost weird to think Peter, Paul and Mary were aging the same way all of us have been aging, because we always think about music being timeless and the musicians never changing, like they are stuck in their own little world and nothing will ever come along and change that. Unfortunately we all grow older, and it's especially unfortuate when a key member of a popular band dies suddenly.
Mary died last week. It's still shocking to me to be totally honest. I never would have guessed she'd be the first to go. I don't know, I don't like to sit here looking at album covers and imagine who's the first member to die, but I can't believe it was the gorgeous and talented Mary. She played such an important role in the band for so many years.
What strikes me about Peter, Paul and Mary above everything else is the way they can take a simple vocal melody and make it magical with gorgeous vocals and honest emotions. It's genius because most bands can't pull off simple and honest emotions in such a beautiful and memorable way.
The first LP is one of the highlights of the bands amazing career in the folk rock style. I was reading the back of the album cover where it talks about the kind of compassion Peter, Paul and Mary brings to the table and how optimistic their music is. That's a good word- optimistic. In fact there was a TON of musical acts soon after Peter, Paul and Mary hit the scene that would create music with the desire to give listeners an optimistic future. So that makes Peter, Paul and Mary a major influence and an extremely likeable band.
Pick up one of their albums and experience simple joy the way it was meant to be done. Rest in peace Mary. Your beautiful voice will live on forever.
Still Going! Sep 17, 2009 I saw Peter, Paul, and Mary at the Hungry I in San Francisco. I still play the original record.........some things last forever.
Ageless Perfection Sep 17, 2009 I was 14 when this album came out, and I remember that it was the only thing I wanted for Christmas. I recall putting it on my record player, and dancing around the house in total ecstasy, singing along with the harmonies.
Today, Mary died. My heart is so heavy, my memories so full of this wonderful group and all the years of happiness and enlightenment they have given me.
This is the best album--so fresh, so vibrant, so full of heart. I'm playing it now, as the tears cascade down my cheeks. I was shaped and fashioned by this music, and so very much of who I am today as a person is because of the impact and conscience PP&M gave me.
Great lp Mar 17, 2009 I love this cd. My grandparents transfered their lp to cd, and the sound is great. I am listening as I write.
500 Miles is a hauntingly beautiful song with lead vocals by Mary. The lyrics are relevant even today; so is Where Have All the Flowers Gone, for that matter.
Autumn to May and It's Raining are good childrens songs, although I think Autumn to May is also about the loss of innocence.
All in alll, a great Lp!
First and Best Dec 02, 2008 Although this was Peter Paul and Mary's first album, it contains some of their finest material. A number of the songs from this album find their way onto "best of" compilations. Their beautiful harmonies and heartfelt joy in the music make this album a true pleasure to listen to, and it brings back many memories.
