"Metz's Perfection chronicles with lapidary precision one woman's climb back to happiness after not just a spouse's death, but also the shocking recognition that her life before that death was not what she had thought it was. The journey is a painful one, but Ms. Metz is much the stronger for having survived to recount it."
--Julie Powell, author of Julie & Julia

"Julie Metz's memoir of how her marriage unraveled after her mate's death is piercingly honest, haunting, and heartbreaking. Anyone who has ever been in a bad relationship will over-identify."
--Susan Shapiro, author of Five Men Who Broke My Heart and Lighting Up

"It is impossible to put Perfection down as we follow Julie Metz through her true story of love, lies, loss, and moving forward. Her raw and brave writing makes you want to cheer Metz on as she pieces her life back together, one beautiful sentence at a time."
--Marian Fontana, author of A Widow's Walk

"This aching memoir of love, loss, and deception is candid and compelling. I found myself rooting for Julie Metz in her search for a happy `second life.'"
--Hilma Wolitzer, author of The Doctor's Daughter and Hearts

Julie Metz's life changes forever on one ordinary January afternoon when her husband, Henry, collapses on the kitchen floor and dies in her arms. Suddenly, this mother of a six-year-old is the young widow in a bucolic small town. And this is only the beginning. Seven months after Henry's death, just when Julie thinks she is emerging from the worst of it, comes the rest of it: She discovers that what had appeared to be the reality of her marriage was but a half-truth. Henry had hidden another life from her.

"He loved you so much." That's what everyone keeps telling her. It's true that he loved Julie and their six-year-old daughter ebulliently and devotedly, but as she starts to pick up the pieces and rebuild her life without Henry in it, she learns that Henry had been unfaithful throughout their twelve years of marriage. The most damaging affair was ongoing--a tumultuous relationship that ended only with Henry's death. For Julie, the only thing to do was to get at the real truth--to strip away the veneer of "perfection" that was her life and confront each of the women beneath the veneer.

Perfection is the story of Julie Metz's journey through chaos and transformation as she creates a different life for herself and her young daughter. It is the story of coming to terms with painful truths, of rebuilding both a life and an identity after betrayal and widowhood. It is a story of rebirth and happiness--if not perfection.

3horror story  Nov 15, 2009
This was a hard book to finish..........once I realized it was a horror story. It raises alot of questions: Why did the author write this? She has laid out the most personal details of her life and her husband's and they are raw, unpleasant details. It's obvious that this couple were intelligent, talented people and privileged people. Henry can make a meal noone will ever forget and Julie has many good friends and not only spends summers in Maine, but travels to Rome, Florence, Africa (their honeymoon) and England. No money troubles. Julie is supporting the family through her graphic art while Henry is working on his books.........Unfortunately, Henry has writer's block which requires visits to a psychiatrist and ministrations by a hoard of women the cute Henry is able to seduce to prop up his self esteem. Julie is clueless. Absolutely clueless. Yes, their marriage is filled with unpleasant fights. Yes, Henry does not respect her emotional reactions and expects her to view things HIS way. But Julie continues to think he's cute and he gives her such literate poems for Valentine's Day.

Things come crashing down when Henry drops dead of a pulmonary embolism. This shouldn't happen to a couple in their 40's. How does Julie cope? Staying in bed. Not eating. Engaging a young friend to be Henry's body substitute. When she discovers Henry's secret life she carries out a full frontal attack on the many mistresses: "What were you thinking........f......ing my husband?" Eventually she comes to the conclusion that Henry was a troubled soul who didn't have enough time to right his wrongs.

More questions: Since Julie has laid out all the dirty laundry why does she change the names of her daughter and her husband for the book? Isn't that a lame attempt to pretend that she didn't involve them? Julie's not big on celibacy we soon find out. She reveals her past encounters and all of her internet hookups. Finally she meets a trustworthy man and they form an "excellent family".

I respected Julie's devotion to her daughter and her maintaining of good friendships and her search for understanding..........But this was not a pleasant book to read and I would not recommend it to anyone. Call it Marriage: A Horror Story.

5Raw and Real  Oct 28, 2009
I stayed up past midnight to finish Perfection. It's raw and real, Metz doesn't sugar coat her late husband's betrayal and deception. Her pain/heartache/shock/grief/anger are palpable.

Perfection should be required reading for every couple considering marriage--a what not to do manual, and I wish Julie Metz and I were friends.

1Who was more narcissistic?  Oct 22, 2009
After reading this book, I couldn't figure out if the author or her husband was more narcissistic. It seems they truly belonged together. I wanted to like her and empathize but just couldn't. Did anyone else question the scene where she walks into his study while he's there, finds a unlikely sex toy in a box on his desk, tries it on, giggles, and walks out with no question? I thought this book was creepy. Who LIVES in a town like that?

2just not right.....  Oct 21, 2009
i am only 2/3 of the way through this book but find myself disliking Julie more and more with each minute detail on every page, of every email, of every phone conversation and encounters with friends. why she feels/felt compelled to put this into print is beyond me. would she have written this and published this if her husband were still alive and simply an ex-husband? would she have been allowed to legally? this is defamation of character at its highest of heights. is it fair to drag his infidelities into broad daylight for everyone to know? if she felt the need to put all of this onto paper as a carthetic process, bravo....but to mass-produce it for the world, and her daughter, to witness and devour each indescretion her husband committed, is completely out of line.

marriages, women, men, families, suffer these sorts of things all the time. you sit down with your closest girlfriends over glasses of wine and plates of pasta....and vent. you do not tell absolutely everyone.

Julie, have some dignity, for heaven's sake (hah, funny pun!)

this could have been a great fiction novel. i wish it was. i wish it had been.
