Description:

It must be hard being a George Michael fan. Patience is only his fourth studio effort in the 18 years since Wham! split, so its release must be some cause for celebration. There always seems to have been something preventing him from releasing a new album--from arrests for lewd behavior, protracted battles with record companies, or prolonged periods of grieving for departed family and friends. Thankfully, Patience is pretty good.

Flitting between fraught ballads and up-tempo adult pop (the misguided sample-laden single "Freeek!" being the unnecessary exception), George here returns to the structure and mood of 1990s Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1. Patience is at its most delicate and moving with its title track, the intense, tabloid-attacking "Through" and the painful family memories of "My Mother Had a Brother." To balance this, hearts will be raised by "Amazing," with its echoes of the Bee Gees, "Round Here," in which George remembers his early days scampering around Bushey with Andrew Ridgley, and "Cars and Trains," which celebrates the kind of lifestyle that so riled the LAPD back in 1998. That's the thing about George Michael these days. Love him or loathe him, he is unapologetically himself. And fans should be very grateful for that. --Dominic Wills

5Great album!  Apr 13, 2009
George Michael makes a great modern day pop album with Patience. I will admit some of the songs are alittle on the adult side as far as being slow. But a few of the tracks are great pop/club songs. Freek! has to be the track that stood out to me most. It's very resmicent of Kylie Minogue's Speakerphone. There's alot of synth with a mix of quirky and weird music. Car and Trains is an intersting track. I also loved Flawless Great Dance Pop song!It gets really good towards the end. This def. a versitale album, which i think helped it sell. It's got a great range of of music on this album! George Michael knows how to pick really great music, and that's way this album has sold millions in the us and around the world! If you love pop music or r and b then this def. an album for for you!

5Pure Brilliance  Nov 20, 2008
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is George Michael. This album is a masterpiece. "Listen Without Prejudice," "Older," and "Patience" are the three to have really. Most fans appreciate "Faith" and Wham! the most, which are great too, but it is with these three albums where we hear George Michael the Artist. If you're just looking for the fast songs to bop your head to, or the heartfelt songs you've heard a million times on the radio, then get George's "Twenty-Five" album, which is an outstanding collection, the 3-CD set is highly recommended. But if you're ready to sit down and truly hear why George is absolutely one of the greatest songwriters, then listen to every single song on: "Listen Without Prejudice" "Older" and "Patience" -- and you'll see why he's up there with the very best of all-time.

3An important album for this musician  Nov 06, 2007
I first was aquainted with George Michael at the age of 7 or 8, when watching a live performance of "Somebody To Love" with Queen and George, for the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert. Little did i know what an impact that had on my life.

I think i owe George Michael some thanks for, in part ,helped make Freddie Mercury my favorite singer of all time and in turn, Freddie being the reason why i passionatly love singing today.

I never really got into George Michael, but i started to delve into his songs and found duets he did , and previous stuff with Wham, i really ended up like the Christmas song he did, and even got to sorta liking the song "Young Guns".

With my growing appreciation with soul and r&b , i developed more an ear for George Michael i think and now finally gave one of his albums a full devoted listen, and ill say i dont regret purchasing this album. For $13, i think its pretty good value.

My favorite songs on this album ended up being,

"Flawless": Its got a very dancable electronic sound to it, and its fun and exciting. The biggest reason at the time as to why i decided to buy the album in the first place.

"Amazing": is an upbeat, postive sounding sound, one could dance to. I love the lyrics when he sings "...How ya gonna make it on your own, if luck is a lady...maybe luck is a lady... I was going going down for the third time...my heart was broken...i was not open to your suggestions...i had so many questions...that you just kissed away" ...etc, its nice upbeat song thats kinda infectious, if i may say so.

"American Angel": is a real nice sounding, slower song, that has a soothing melody. With some clever lyrics going on, in my opinion. Its just relaxing, and again, that melody of " My American Angel...He doesnt want to fight...My Usa of Angel...holds me in the dead of night...takes away that fear...".

"Precious Box": Though its kind of on the lengthy side, clocking at 7 minutes and 39 seconds, i like how it touches on that electronic sound again. And not to say long songs are not good...i love deep lengthy songs, but in this particular one in kinda recycles a bit and doesnt give much of a varied body of sounds for such a length, if that makes sense. But its a good song to listen to while driving, or while laying back in bed.

I would say a lot of these songs on PATIENCE are worthy of lying back in bed and just reflecting the lyrical passages. The title track, "Patience" is a kind of mournfull song that copes with loss i think, depicting the attempt to understand and come to terms with pain of losing a loved one. Though its not overtly sad and meloncholy, its still a bit sad, but not hopeless though.

George Michael has made some high quality songs here. He put a lot into them, and in many ways, very neccasary, due to the personal losses George Michael delt with at that time before hand, this album was and is a way of mourning, and its a healthy practice of it, that confronts deeper questions and thoughts of a heavenly father above him and at the same time remembering to still be positive. In all, this was a very important album for George Michael to make.

George Michael still seems youthfull to me, and hes learning through life. I hope his next album is more of a celebration, and more triumphant, but thats up to George Michael, becouse he does what he wants.

I give this album 3 and 1/2 stars becouse its not the most inspiring stuff ive heard or the most memorable, but its infectious and likable enuff to warrent more multiple listens, and i think with more listens, one will come to appreciate more of the songs and maybe end up really liking this album, sorta like i have.

The half star part i think was neccasary becouse i think lyrically, this album is kind of admirable, becouse its an honest matured disclosure of very personal things in Georges life, from death to new found trust in someone.

This is a quality album, with reflective soul searching, yet still offers a some excitment and dancable tunes...like "Flawless", which after seeing live clips of the performance at Wembley, made me want the album big time.

Again, i give it 3 and 1/2 stars

I hope George comes back and does another album soon that is perhaps even more upbeat and uplifting, after hes settled with his current personal situations.

5Have Patience  Aug 09, 2007
I've read some of the reviews on this particular album. I think some of you are "ragging" on George too much. The man is in love, give him a break. The whole CD is about love, his love for the world, the new love in his life, love for his family, and love for his fans. The man is greatful for it all. Don't hate, Congratulate!!!

So, he's not as angry right now, if this were written by Marvin Gaye, would you all be as harsh, I don't think so. Marvin wrote about his personal experiences too, that's what made him great!

The man could lighten up, actually.

Track #1 "Patience", is somber and sad, the first time I heard it, I had to remember it was song, before I sank into a deep depression.

Track #2 "Amazing", is just that, the video suggests that he's still attracted to women, hard to say. Really doesn't matter it's George, after all.

Track #3 "John and Elvis are Dead", he questions why they're gone and where is God when these things occur, (my best answer to that is God needed them to be elsewhere) and he kindly mentions Marvin.

Track #4 "Cars and Trains", clever, never thought I'd be bobbing my head to a song about self-destructive behavior.

Track #6 "My Mother Had A Brother", is classic George, and my personal favorite. It talks about loss, life after loss and love.

Last, but not least, "Through", please don't tell us you're through.

Those of you who think this album is sappy, please give it another listen, George only releases original material every few years. He's on tour now, so who knows when we'll get more. I personally can't wait. Thank you, George.
