Excellent Book for Every Significant Adult in a Child's Life Nov 21, 2009 I had a chance to hear Dr. Dan Siegel speak on the topic of "Mindsight", the topic of his next book due in January of 2010. Since I'm an educational consultant and a parenting coach, my next stop was the book store to pick up this gem of a book. I teach a class based on my professional knowledge and Martha Beck's work, called "Guiding Your Children to Their Own North Star". As I quoted Dr. Siegel liberally during the latest go round of the class, I found that my clients(coaches and parents) made greater strides in really understanding how the "leftovers" from their own childhood really impacted their relationship with their children. The key question, "Explain how your child's behavior triggered your response", helped them understand that their values and the consequences imposed on their children were more about their own past then the child's behavior.
I've also found that an unexpected benefit of this book is that it helps my adult clients become more aware of "who they really are". The "AHAH" moments from the week discussed at the beginning of class..show that they are beginning to reconnect with their own essense.
I've recommended this book to many of my clients and they all find it to be extremely beneficial. It's a bit of a technical read, but going through the chapters again and again is helpful to absorb all the key findings.

important info but much of the writing is redundant Oct 12, 2009 it wasn't until i finished the book that i really appreciated how important the content is. i almost didn't get through it because i found the style of writing unnecessarily complicated and redundant. that being said, i recommend it anyway because understanding myself and my tendencies has improved my relationship with both my son and my husband.

A great book for every parent ready to look into their own patterns Jun 18, 2009 Parenting From The Inside Out is a great book for every parent who'd love to learn more about their own patterns in parenting. Being a parent myself, I found it very helpful to have this book guide me a little further then would be usual. I ask myself many times why I react in a certain way and reading this book gave me several 'A-ha moments'.
The research findings on which the book is based make the book even more valuable. It gives the book and it's philosophy a strong foundation in science. Siegel and Hartzell have been able to present complicated research in an easy, readable way. A great book to understanding your own parenting style.
