4Fight The Revelry, Use Somebody, Just Get It Because This Album's On Fire  Nov 19, 2009
A darling of indie rock for much of this decade, including finding a prominent place on the soundtrack for Disturbia, Kings of Leon is not anything new. What is new however is their sound for this effort. While their previous albums were a bit on the more abstract indie side, this ventures into area rock mode, and it works quite well for the band, showing their a force to be reckoned with in the future, all the while providing some killer rock tracks.

Highlights Include:
Crawl
Sex On Fire
Manhattan
Notion
Use Somebody

This album is best looked at as a whole by comparing its first two songs. 'Closer' is a track that seems like it's trying to achieve something, but rather bubbles in mediocrity the whole way through. It may not be a bad song, but it's not a good one either, and unfortunately the album sort of revels in this type of song where the destination is unknown, and instead you just get lost in the desert. Granted, none of these songs are exactly approachable, and many of them take a few listens before you come around to them, but still.

Then there's songs like 'Crawl,' which are just killer rock tracks, demonstrated by this track especially. It's guitar work is simply incredible, and KOL achieves the mood of the song perfectly. Be sure of this, when something works on this album, they seem to hit it out of the park, as they do with "Sex On Fire." It's kind of obscene, and its music video is downright weird, but the delivery is just so good that it's kind of irresistible. In the category of one of the most unexpected smash hits of the year, 'Use Somebody' is pure arena anthemic rock, and it achieves it with lighters in hand and all. It's chorus may leave something to be desired, but it's still a great song.

One of the keys to what makes Kings of Leon so good is Nathan Followill's vocals. Song after song is just a great performance by Followill, and it seals the deal and simply makes the album. In fact, while the comparison is overused, you could compare the vocal style to a belting Bono if he'd grown up in Kentucky. It's simply brilliant at times, and it's quite a unique joy to listen to.

Overall, "Only By The Night" is a mostly solid rock record that highs are real high, and its lows are frustratingly middling. The future of modern rock? Maybe. They certainly have the building blocks for something truly good here. But for now, lows aside, this album hits on some truly spectacular rock moments and its at least worth a listen.

5amazing...  Nov 14, 2009

I been waiting a while to say a few words about this amazing band and album. I own all their cds but Only by the night is their best. Maybe it's the wonderful songwriting or the soulful vocals but I have been hooked on this band for some time now and the CD just gets better with every listen. I won't go in too deep about the songs other than to say this album is great from start to finish. Favorite track would have to be Cold in the Desert, such a brilliant song in every way. Just buy it you won't be disapointed.

5A Taste of KOL  Nov 13, 2009
I've always heard of Kings of Leon... I never really liked all their songs. but I did have about one or two that stuck in my mind.
Anyway I had a friend who listens to them, and she was Highly impressed with KOL present album... only by the night. So I had to listen and I loved it. I loved it enough to get my own copy.

Here are my favorites:

1. Closer --> First track on the album.... I love the beat and the way it starts out. The song is about despair, and although thats what it is about, the beat helps it along. It made me feel sad... but in a good way.

2.Crawl --> another good one. Song has me rocking to the beat. love the lyrics.

Manhattan and 17 are also equally good. Be Somebody is really good.

My most personal favorite is "I want you".. Its quite catchy.

I have maybe 2 songs that I'm not crazy about, but I would listen to them either way.... Sex on fire is one of the most popular songs off the album. and I know everybody loves it. Its not a favorite of mine.. I'm not sure, but maybe I heard it being overplayed. but its still a good song...

I used to mainly be an R&B, Pop... hip hop kind of girl... Somewhere along the way a few years ago that I expanded my musical taste.. so now I'm into a bit of everything from Rock to Classical music..

I don't buy albums often, but when I do, its because its a Darn good Album that has more than 2 hits on the album... and this Album constitutes as a Darn Good One.

5Selling Out? Not a Chance  Nov 12, 2009
Kings of Leon had slowly gathered a pretty dedicated following with their previous releases; Youth & Young Manhood, Aha Shake Heartbreak and Because of the Times, and rightly so. The music rocked, the lyrics were at times juvenile but Caleb's voice has an aged quality to it that makes even the dumbest lyrics sound plausible. I was leery of Only By the Night because everyone described it as a much more "polished" album, and when I think of KOL, I don't want to think of polished. Later, after hearing their first single, Sex On Fire, I was very disappointed. However, this album as a whole is amazing. It is full of what you have come to expect from a KOL album, namely catchy guitar hooks, great singing and some pretty dumb lyrics (Sex on Fire being the prime example). The standouts of this album have to be "Be Somebody", "17" and "Notion". They are not as rockin' as earlier Kings songs but they are definitely catchy and Caleb's voice sounds as strong and soulful here as it ever has. If you like Kings Of Leon, buy this album, and listen to it a couple times. You'll realize that it more than equals their earlier works. Can't wait to hear what they do next.
