Talentless, boring, novelty act Nov 06, 2009 Once again, the public shows just how tasteless, boring, and mindless their musical tastes can be. Reminds me of "Who Let the Dogs Out?". BTW, who let this dog out?

What's that I hear....... Nov 02, 2009 It's the music industry scraping at the bottom of the barell. It seems like anybody can come out with an album even if they don't have talent, like Katy Perry. The music industry will hire anybody so they can make money off them. My dog can probably sing better than Katy Perry. She is a good example of a person with no talent and yet comes out with an album. I do like her song "I kissed a girl"

Not your American Idols pop music ..... Oct 19, 2009 In the interest of full disclosure I have to tell you my tastes so you know where I'm coming from.
I do not typically like Katy's brand of music. My tastes are eclectic but usually stay well clear of contemporary American Pop music. I could get into the reasons but I'm not sure they're pertinent to this review.
I am currently a John Coltrane freak or to put it more generally a 50's -60's Jazz/Fusion nut. The only radio music that I like, or listen to, is old school Classic Rock such as Yes , Led Zepplein , Van Halen etc ...
To me , post 1985 has been a rough ride for American radio . Sure there have been the Pearl Jams, Alanis Morisettes and Sarah McLachlans of the world to keep it real but not much else.
....and in steps Katy Perry.
Make no mistake about it this is American pop.
So if you like Miley Cirus, Lady Ga Ga, Kelly Clarkson and all that garbage you will definitely like this.
But what I like about Katys album is that her songs are classic blends of great storytelling and great music. They're personal endeavors put to intricate but catchy music that endear you to the artist.
She's an old school musician that writes her own stuff. WRITES HER OWN STUFF! C'mon ?? no one does that anymore but I digress.
Whatever kind of music you like this album WILL stick in your head. It's that good.
Knowing where I stand , it's been since Alanis' "Jagged Little Pill" since I've been this blown away by "new" pop talent.
And even that album didn't roll me like this one.
Katy is phenomenal. Thank god the "powers that be" got it right with her because, with what we've been given for music over the last 15 years, I was getting ready to trade in my radio for a trash can.
Why do I only give her 4 stars if I'm this blown away??
Well...two reasons and they are "I kissed a girl" and "Ur so Gay".
I feel those songs take away from the overall artistic value of the album because they fall squarely into the mold of all that I dislike about American pop. In my opinion, they're boring preconceived substance lacking pieces that don't belong on an otherwise perfect gem.
I do understand why kissed a girl is on the album though. I think the producers were smart for putting it there as it catapulted her stardom as it were. However, that doesn't mean I have to like the song. I pretty much despise it but enough of that rant...
This is a great debut album from a very talented artist.
There are vast differences between the songs without straying too far from the center of what the music is about.
My two personal favorites are "Hot n Cold " and "One of the Boys" but that's today. A couple of weeks ago it was "Waking up in Vegas" and "Thinking of you" . The point there being this is solid album oriented music that is designed to appeal to your tastes differently at different times.
This picky son of a b**ch loves her!! Go get 'em Katy!!

I listened to this album, and I liked it (a lot)... Oct 15, 2009 Known better for gimmick than talent, it may be surprising to some to actually discover that Katy Perry actually has some of that too. Her debut album, `One of the Boys', is a pretty solid collection of pop tracks that are destined for radio play and have enough catchy likeability to make them memorable. From her outrageous antics on the hit (and I mean MAJOR hit) `I Kissed a Girl' to the surprising tenderness of `Thinking of You' (the two best tracks on the album, by far), Perry shows a nice range for the genre she's embraced.
If you like this brand of pop/rock entertainment then you will be more than pleased with `One of the Boys'.
Looking at her radio singles, these are nice little examples of what Katy has to offer. The first was `Ur So (not going to even attempt the word that gets my reviews banned for no apparent reason)' and, while it has a funky vibe to it, it grows tired quickly for me. If I had heard this song on the radio (I never did, surprisingly) I wouldn't have rushed out to buy this album. `I Kissed A Girl' is a much better song; cheeky but it remains fresh, even after getting played out ridiculously on the radio. It's fun and spunky and remains one of the most recognizable songs of last year. `Hot N Cold' is also a great anthem for this young popstar. The `all too accurate' portrayal of the crazy boyfriend is a fan favorite, and deservedly so. I used to really like `Waking Up In Vegas', but it has grown tired with all the radio play. It doesn't hold up over time and just becomes rather boring.
Besides, Vegas is not something I personally want to remember.
My favorite track from Miss Perry is the stunningly sincere `Thinking of You', a track that nearly brings me to tears with its power. She sounds quite a bit like Alanis Morissette here (major compliment for this greenhorn).
The majority of her album carries the same jovial structure of her most popular single, `I Kissed A Girl'. The opening title track is fun and gets the album started off in the right direction, and the `throw your fists up and chant' closer `Fingerprints' gets you pumped and ready to start the album completely over. `If You Can Afford Me' and `Mannequin' are serviceable, if not a tad forgettable. `Self Inflicted' is nearly brilliant and one of the best on the album. It's just crazy fun and so catchy!
The beautifully controlled `Lost' and the nicely crafted `I'm Still Breathing' serve as reminders that Perry has a voice and can carry a ballad quite nicely. I prefer `Lost' of the two, but neither have the emotional power of `Thinking of You'.
`One of the Boys' is a pretty solid debut effort, one that shows a lot of potential and room for growth, growth that I'm pretty confident Katy Perry can make. Sadly, she is not really considered a talented singer as much as a media target. Hopefully enough people will actually give this album the attention it deserves. Hating on her because she's a crazy party girl reminiscent of Lindsay Lohan doesn't mean she isn't talented. If you can separate the singer from the celebrity I think you'll see that this album is one to be taken seriously!

This CD is so gay Oct 13, 2009 So I'm listening to the CD now. I'm currently on the "Ur So Gay" track now and the line in the beginning "I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf / while #$%^$#%$ off listening to Mozart" has been edited out. Do not buy this CD. Buy the digital download instead.
