Review from Melt Magazine - Columbus, OH Nov 17, 2009 With their roaring self titled debut EP release dropping one day before the sun moved into the Leo constellation, One Day As A Lion are poised to pounce into boughten-back boomboxes world wide. This concrete-jungle-stalking, alternative hip-hop exploit is the collaborative effort between rageaholic Zach de la Rocha and Jon Theodore, the former drummer of The Mars Volta. More interesting than the unlikely duo's hook-up is Zach's role as the keyboard player and the addition of melodic singing to his arsenic, arsenal of activist articulation. The keys sound like a looped Atari glitch running through a clipping bass amp with a ring mod effect, and fabricate a fitting sonic platform for Zach's protest-hoarse warbling and raspy rapping. A subtle sophistication of his playing is the doubling of select notes with a subwoofer destroying low octave, a sensibility utilized by comrade Tom Morello to add ground gripping low end to his riffs. There's not much to say about his flows other than they are as cement-solid as anything he has put a mic to. Lyrically he's put together a college of the usual social criticisms and violent fantasies of retaliation against political wackness, that lacks much of the story telling elements and song length consistent themes that were forged in the Rage days. On the up side, the stripped down feel of a pair of angry intellectuals banging out these sidewalk-gritty tracks is exciting, and with the two standout tracks "Wild International" and "If You Fear Dying" coming out of the twenty minute experiment, there's no arguing that the EP doesn't have it's payoffs. - Tyler Starkey

Could Have Been May 02, 2009 The actual music and songwriting here is very good. but unfortunately the the mix on the entire record is awful. The vocals are lost underneath the guitars, so much in fact that it completely ruins the listening experience for me.

Fury on the AM funeral dial Apr 23, 2009 Better to live one day as a lion
than 1000 years as a lamb
Zack's back! He's joined forces with Jon Theodore, an enigmatic drummer from MARS VOLTA. This dynamic duo surges with an unbridled energy in a drastic effort to wake the ignorant masses from the enormous travesties and shameful fabrications that are constantly rocking them to sleep.
It's a strange comfort, not to mention an invigorating slap in the face, to once again hear the former RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE vocalist confront the corrupt world powers and immoral figureheads that try to significantly distort the truth to their advantage.
Zack de la Rocha is an extraordinary activist and inspirational poet, first and foremost. If this was just a book filled with 5 of his poems, it'd still be well worth the price. Zack judges his success as a musician not by how many albums he sells, but how much positive change the particular band helps emerge, politically speaking.
Now, on to the music. Of course this 5-song EP isn't enamored with catchy little pop singles spewing out some silly little nursery rhymes. Turn on your radio for that nonsense. Zack's got his hands full on the electro keyboards, whirling out some some bizarre and funky industrial alternative beats that will ricochet through your earcanal in relentless fashion. Of course he raps the lyrics with the unmatched intensity we've come to expect. Jon matches him step for step with some excellent drum work.
Lyrically, his peoms harness the same rebellious spirit and ultra-significant context. It's all very intelligent verse, intent on penetrating your thoughts and sparking contemplative discussions. Awesome. Not all easily decipherable, but the overall connotations are unmistakeable.
The opening lyrics from the first song, WILD INTERNATIONAL:
"They say that in war that truth be the first casualty."
Some other lines that left an impression on me...
"Ocean of past crimes now fill our hearts to tear them down."
"your God is a homeles assassin."
"why would we ever let a few white christians fictions
shape our tomorrow following them."
"if you fear dying, then you're already dead."
Awesome, awesome stuff. An important message resonates from the core of this incredible artistic endeavor. Definitely not intended for those who believe ignorance is bliss. Although the overall sound is somewhat limited by the lack of guitarist in the band, this wasn't meant to be some intricate, melodic audio-massage to gently soothe your merry disposition.

CLOSE TO RAGE - 5 SONGS Jan 27, 2009 Happy with my purchase. Only 5 songs, but good. Great sound for only having 2 people in the band. Not Rage but that was expected.
