Not switchfoot quality Dec 25, 2009 This album has some great songs,
Let Your love be strong
Awakening
Head over Heels
but the rest are pretty forgettable. Like Amateur Lovers, what in the world is the point of that song?
Well, I know what its about, I just don't think its very well done.
It seems switchfoot is trying to experiment as much as possible, and make "new" sounds, but I loved them for the old!!!!Like someone said above me, the album seems rushed, like they did a bunch of songs in a short time.
If you liked "The Beautiful letdown" then this album is not for you
(Hello Hurricane is more their old style)
And you wonder why they've been around this long! Dec 17, 2009 Just when you think Switchfoot hits its zenith of creativity and sound in the 2004's Nothing is Sound album, bam! You get Oh! Gravity!
This album, like all the others, gives a different sound while maintaining true to the essence of Switchfoot both in lyrics and melody.
Oh! Gravity- Short and to the point, like Jon Says, its about the laws of Gravity (actually a theory now) which states that two objects of mass will be attracted to each other, and how this does not work in the social environment we live in, Example: Prejudice, racism, etc... Its a fast Pop Arena Rock song!
American Dream: Just as fast and fun to play (if you've learned it on your guitar). About the corporate mess we become when we turn our dreams into green paper lusting opportunities.
Dirty Second Hands: A New Orleans kind of south style guitar riff that propels a song about time and how we are always being robbed of it. It's one of their best and most original in sound and voice.
Awakening: One of my favorite songs: Favorite line, beside chorus is, "These dreams started singing to me out of nowhere, and in all my life I don't think I ever felt so alive."
Circles: The spiraling disillusionment of life that becomes some of us when we lose ourselves in the machine, society and forget our greater goals and dreams. "Spinning out in circles!"
Ameature Lovers: (I never spell it right!) A song about the disconnection between us all, how we don't know how to love any more, at least not the right way and so we're all lost in a sense of inner seclusion trying desperately to find that sense of fulfillment, a wanting that we're all searching for. Great song as Jon screams "pro-pro-professional!" at the end. You'll love this pop rock jam.
Faust Midas and Myself: The Lyrics say it all!
Head over Heels: Thought it was a worship song the first time I heard it. I guess it could go both ways. A great love song for someone supportive, a lover mostly. "In this life, your the one place i call home! In this life, you're the feeling i belong!..."
Yesterdays: A heartfelt funeral song that get's me every time i listen to it, so i usually just skip it.
Burn out Bright: Great fast rock pop song. "If time was never on our side, then before i die i wanna burn out bright!" Love it!
4:12: about how we lose ourselves in our work and daily mundane tasks and soon we forget the beauty all around us! "Soul's aren't built of stone!"
Let Your Love be Strong: My third favorite song of theirs. Lyrically beautiful. A fulfilling end to a great journey- oh i mean CD.
: )
I could go on for pages but i'll just stop there with a simple summary of each. It's different from Nothing is Sound and everything before that, but true to Switchfoot's ever varying taste and ambition for better ways to connect to us all and create greater music.
Its UPLIFTING and INSPIRING! = 5/5 (as indicated in stars)
Well done Oct 12, 2009 Starting with a caveat that art is subjective, I must say that Oh! Gravity is a most excellent album. The lyrics are as deep as all other Switchfoot songs, the chord progressions are fresh and the beats are engaging. Dirty Second Hands and Circles are what I call successful experiments, with complex, non-conventional beats that keep you guessing. Standouts. I love the lyrical bass underlay in "Circles", and the end segment reminds me of Scarborough Fair. The album is a veritable smorgasboard of styles, with clapping as the added spice. I look forward to more harmonics among the band singers in the future.
Oh Gravity! Mar 30, 2009 This is a great cd, I was actually surprised at how much I have enjoyed it. I didn't expect it to be that great, but it is a great cd.
CD - "Oh Gravity", by Switchfoot Jan 29, 2009 Thought the CD was wasn't quite as good as previous CD's of theirs, but did have some good tracks that I enjoyed.
