3Proceed with thoughtful, open minded caution  Nov 09, 2009
At first glance I rather liked this book for some new light (for me at least) shed on the body's absorption of nutrients in various foods depending on their preparation and cooking methods (mainly the sections on nuts, beans, and grains). Some of it seemed revelatory, and some of it seemed a bit fatalistic, so I have copied down everything that seemed too good to be true or too scary to be real, and am now conducting further research and cross-examination. Some of the information in the book has been born out by other studies, but some of the things in here seem fanciful at best. No matter, it is the educated reader's responsibility to question the information and do his/her own follow up, and to reach your own conclusions.

One of the things that disappointed me was the folk references to the "intuitive" wisdom of the ancient cultures as some form of abstract sentimental verification of nutritional claims. These have no place in a serious objective study, because one can easily manipulate this into supporting any foolish claim, such as slavery and the oppression of women must be OK because our wise ancestors were so intuitively aware of the esoteric truths so hidden and obscured by our poor modern minds.

Another thing I didn't like was how the information was mixed in all over the book. I would have preferred all the literary commentary and speculation up front, followed by dry nutritional analysis - food group by food group; followed by recipes free of cute commentary in the margins, followed by appendix info, then the sources and on into the index. I know this is what they largely did do, but there were too many times where I had to flip back and forth to find complete info on a given subject. Just put all the crucial what, why, and where for each food in one place, then give me recipes.

I'm also pretty sure that the authors don't even make half the stuff they put in the recipes, because you either need to be rich with your own kitchen staff, or have lots of free time - LOTS of it (rich spouse, no kids, no job) in order to follow all the tips and tricks this book recommends.

I found the book overall to be good, although insufficient and unreliable. Why? Good because it was a thought provoking catalyst for me to study further, checking claims and facts which I wouldn't have done otherwise. Insufficient and unreliable because there is so much contrary evidence out there (just read the one star ratings!) that makes a more circumspect individual skeptical about accepting everything in this book as gospel. I borrowed the book from a friend, but would not buy one - this book is a stepping stone to better things. So by all means give it a long thoughtful look - you may find a helpful nugget of truth here and there, but move on to do more research and cobble together your own quilt of truth to clothe yourself. Just keep in touch with your doctor. This book is no cure-all. Three stars for all that. No more.

5Supremely Enlightening New Understanding of Food & Preparation (that works!)  Nov 07, 2009
Read this book cover to cover, and don't forget the sidebars! It's not just another cookbook! New facts, studies, great recipes and it works! I have a chronic illness-been eating this way 6 weeks, seeing forward movement. :0)) Best of all I feel GOOD and I can eat more foods (previously I could eat no grains-no surprise after reading this book!). I save a ton on vitamins now too, Sally works it all out for you. There's a great section for people like me on a budget, tells where to focus in, how to make it work, great for the working family. Everything Sally said is true, it's wonderful, it's fascinating. I am now an ancient food preparer, I understand how the foods work in my body, and when I don't I quick look it up in the index. I'm so grateful Sally took the time to write this book. I predict a new wave in food preparation and availability...and I Thank God.

This is the book one should get on their wedding day. A new lifestyle to adopt and a great wealth of information. Healthy eating on a low budget. It gives me the control and responsibility for my food choices. I couldn't wait to embark on my adventure of healthy cooking.

I have had this book for over 2 years now....I refer to it on a weekly basis. I have also purchased it for my two daughters-in-law for christmas.
I have found this book very helpful and I love every recipe I have tried.
