Brilliant first album Oct 01, 2009 A refreshing and multi-faceted first album from electric guitar's foremost virtuoso. Satriani's music refuses to be pidgeonholed into a particular genre. He tosses around rock, metal, funk, fusion, prog rock and blues with the ease of a juggler and never drops a note. In addition to his prodigious chops, he also exhibits considerable melodic inventiveness and imagination. This places him in the same league with classic "guitar heroes" like DiMeola, Hackett, Santana, Van Halen, Page, Morse, Blackmore, Moore, Frampton, Fripp, Howe etc. I believe that Steve Hackett's Darktown and later recordings exhibit tangible Satriani influences. This album sounds better and better on each subsequent listen, which is a good sign - there are many layers that need to be peeled back to reveal the beauty and power of this music. Please do not be fooled by the "80's sountrack music" label that some people stick on it. If anything, the adventurous nature of this music is closer in spirit to progressive rock than to shlocky 80's soundtracks. So if you are considering buying it, don't hesitate.
a solid start, but not a must have. Mar 10, 2009 This album is strictly for Satriani fans, completists, collectors, etc.
It is not the best debut album by an artist. Hendrix, Santana, Malmsteen, Clapton, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, the Beatles, etc. all had far superior debuts, that you could tell they were headed for stardom.
Judging from this album, with half tracks firmly stuck in the 80's, I would not imagine Satriani some day being called the best guitarist of our time. I am glad Satriani went on to do bigger and better things than this.
Musical genius Feb 03, 2009 Joe Satriani is a musical genius. It is an experimental work and his first, but is a must have for a fan. I love it.
Very Cool Album Jan 06, 2009 If your a major joe satriani fan you probably own this already.
If you don't you should.
I remember when this was released I thought it was awesome and so much cooler and more original than all the other Instrumental guitar stuff that was going on in the mid eighties. It quickly became one of my favorites and couldn't wait until he released another album-- I think we all know the name of that one!
Wow!! Who is this guy?? Jun 13, 2008 That was my reaction when I first heard this back when it came out. Joe does some very cool gutar work on this. As we all know he just gets better and better. Definitley check this one out.
