One more time with a reasonable amount of feeling May 23, 2009 Much maligned in their later years for being overly enamoured of balladeering Aerosmiths 1996 offering Nine Lives was certainly up against it - especially given the grunge/alternative dreariness we were all plodding through at the time.
And largely this album was up to the task of keeping Aerosmith as a going concern, if not showing a band at it's peak. Opener Nine Lives is a pretty handy hard blues rocker with that Aero-swagger w/Steve Tylers trademark vox acting as circus master. It's not brilliant but it's a good Aero-rocker.
From there the band delve into a range of song constructs from bluesy/funky semi ballads like Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees), trad balladeering like the less than stellar Hole In My Soul to ethnic flavoured Taste of India and back to rockin' out hard on tunes like Somethings Gotta Give. A number of the tunes are in the realm of generic rock 'n' roll but with a twist of swagger and Tylers trademarked quickly sung couplets with amusing contemplation.
Being a band of veterans they know their way around a studio and the band and their producer/recorder/mixer Kevin Shirley have managed to create an album that sounds both crystal clear yet not smelling more sanitised than a hospital and the feel is right. And the whote thing is wrapped in kind of interesting cover and booklet art.
A viable album even if it is blighted with overlong failures like The Farm. You will be rewarded with a varied and enjoyable rock album if you can get over your expectations for the following:
A) Just like their adolescent best
B) Just like their drugfuelled late 70's best
C) As strident and highly polished as their late 80's hair daze revival.
A solid four stars

Snoozefest from the Toxic Twins Jan 17, 2009 Maybe one of Aerosmith's lamest albums. Utterly uncharming, dull and unimaginative. They have made far better albums before and since and you still have a lot of good Aerosmith albums to choose from, this just aint one of em.

sub-par for this band Sep 03, 2008 Aerosmith has cranked out truckloads of awesome albums. I guess eventually, the odds would end up that they'd make a stinker.
This album lacked the energy and direction of previous albums. It was as if Aerosmith was having an identity crisis.
"Pump" or "Toys in the Attic" are much better representations of what Aerosmith can do.

3 1/2 Stars, Aerosmith's last solid album (of the modern era) Jan 29, 2008 Even though Aerosmith's "Nine Lives" was released almost llyrs ago, I still consider it more "Modern" Aerosmith, and not since "Done with Mirrors" has Aerosmith released an album that has more of a feel of the older material. Now, first off, I am not a huge Aerosmith nut. I own very few albums from them, but I am a fan of the older material from the 70's, and the only album that I liked from the 80's was "Done with Mirrors" After that, the band seemed to fall into the pop "toilet" with some lousy album, horrendous pop songs, and whiny lite-rock type ballads. Of course there are fans that happen to like that side of Aerosmith, and there is nothing wrong with that, so I guess this review would be more slated toward the fans of the golden years of the band. "Nine Lives" is far from perfect, but it does avoid the problems of past albums before it. There are hardly any la-de-da ballads, and the hard rock edge of the band comes through on such cuts as "Nine Lives" and "The Farm (clearly the best song they have recorded since "Kings and Queens" There are some more poppy type songs such as Pink, but they are actually enjoyable. So this would be the Aerosmith album to get if you are looking for the modern sound of the band, without all the pop type songs and ballads that have plaqued the band. ENJOY
Just great ! Jan 19, 2008 Again, the band got great success with hits like "Falling in love (is hard on the knees), "Hole in my Soul", "Taste of India" and "Pink" but you have also rock jewels like "Nine Lives", "Full circle", "The Farm" and "Kiss your past good-bye" Overall, another good addition to any rock music cd collection.
