 Pete Yorn, consistant! Apr 30, 2008
Another fantastic Pete Yorn CD. My only problem is the vocal mix. Sometimes you miss his brilliant lyrics. Other than that, it's great. And I'm a huge fan, so if it sucked I'd say so. But it doesn't.

Nightcrawler is another outstanding record by Pete Yorn. Pete's skill is in that everything he does it is obvious that he takes the time to create a new, seperate and cohesive piece of art. Nightcrawler is not musicforthemorningafter and it is not Day I Forgot, nor should it be. To ask Yorn to simply replicate the material that he has already crafted is an insult to his ability to change and create new songs that are able to communicate different feelings.
That said, don't expect nightcralwer to be like his previous work. It is definately a darker album then his others. Most of Yorn's songs require some serious listening to truely appreciate the effort that went into them though, most can be listened to without that kind of inspection.
There are some wonderful and powerfully driving songs such as "undercover," "for us" and mayber even "vampyre" (a very dark song that crescendos into an amazing evocative piece.) Many songs are, in my opinion good but quant. There are a few which are more to the folk music scene such as "the man," and "ice age." There are some which don't fit any particular category but are amazing and I personally think of "bandstand in the sky" which is a bizarre combination of a spiritual, a love song and even what I think is a referance to modern physics.
It is hard to compare this album to his other work since it so unique and different. It may or may not be the Pete Yorn that you like but I can recommend as a wonderful album.

I have to say that this album isn't as immediately engaging as the previous two. However, the infectiousness of "Vampyre" drew me back repeatedly and, with steady rotation, the album has become a staple in my catalogue. "Vampyre" is probably the darkest sounding track I've heard from Pete, but it does behoove him to show more of his range at this point of his career and I would say that the track is his strongest effort in that respect. The reverberating boom of the drum in this track still gives me chills. I was glad to see an album release of "Undercover" as it is a tasty track and compliments nicely here. "For Us" is fantastic and makes good use of varied texture, one moment being slightly rough, then smoothing out to reveal undertones and background sounds that were only hinted at before.
In regard to the intent of the album to represent the twilight of a trilogy, I think that it is stylistically evident, but not necessarily becoming of an artist whose warmth has won his fans. This is not really a complaint about the album, which is well crafted in every respect. It's just that, compared to "musicforthemorningafter" and "day I forgot", the album is somewhat cold. Not to be nihilistic, but this is not a bad thing, it's just not necessarily what I was in the mood for at the time. I certainly wouldn't want Pete to stay pigeonholed in any way. I'm glad he's exploring the possibilities. Pete's musical sensibilities have clearly matured like everyone's do and it is reflected in this album. I'm not going to say he needs to go back to his roots or anything. Every album should be unique and this one is a welcome addition to my collection. However, due to the slightly mechanical aspect of the album, I wouldn't recommend this as the first Pete Yorn album for a new listener to buy. Definitely get them in order.

I love this album. For Us, Undercover and Policies, I play over and over.
The Man, How Do You Go On?, and Splendid Isolation are also strong.
This is the first album I had of Pete's although i did have a live version of Crystal Village from the ONXRT collection that i love.
I've picked up his two previous efforts, but when i start to listen to them, i find i just want to return to this one, it is SO good.
Maybe in a few months, i'll get around to listening to them.

Once again, Pete's made a great album. He's tried some new things that he hasn't in his previous work, but this is a great album.
