Love the straight forward and sound advice. Nov 13, 2009 Bethanny has nailed it on the head with her bestseller. She offers good sound advice on food on how to maintain a heathly, sustainable lifestyle. She is incredibly generous with intimdate details of her private life and also shares the secret eating habits of celebrites that she has worked with over the years. She understands what most women are dealing with in their personal lifes and the challenges that we are faced with. She recognises that food can be used in a destructive way and shares her battle with us on how she overcame this. She taught me in 10 simple steps how to; recognise when I'm hungry, what my body really needs, not to be afraid of food and how to get to know myself and what I really want. Most of all she got me off that crazy merry-go-round of dieting. HOORAY... I love her for it! I'm sharing this with all my girlfriends this Christmas. Can't wait for the next book!
Good "diet" tips...we should already know Nov 05, 2009 I read several other reviews for this book, and although I do agree that the author is "naturally thin" due mainly to her very low intake of calories a day...which I could never do...I think her book was full of helpful "tips" on eating better and not just crash dieting.
Her 10 rules are: (1) Your Diet Is A Bank Account, (2) You Can Have It All, Just Not All At Once (3) Taste Everything, Eat Nothing (4) Pay Attention (5) Downsize Now (6) Cancel Your Membership In The Clean Plate Club (7) Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself (8) Know Thyself (9) Get Real (10) Good For You
I enjoyed her easy to read (and relate to) writing style. She inserts side notes "Bethenny Bytes" "Naturally Thin Thoughts" & "Celebrity Secrets" which act like mini-example stories or nuggets of info.
A lot of what she has to say is common sense, but she just summarizes it all and reminds us to take better care of ourselves because we can all be thin if we work at it.
Suggestions like: eat organic whole foods, smaller portions, exercise, tasting things not eating all of it, enjoying our food slowly and not in front of tv or in car, etc.
I don't think anyone will end up looking like her unless they ignore all the great tips and basically just cut their calories WAY down. Her average day calories comes well under 1000, which is like 2 to 4 times smaller than what most of us consume. But maybe she's right---maybe we should eat like birds so we can look like them :)
Loved it! Nov 02, 2009 I am amazed at some of the reviews surrouding this book. It's like some individuals read snippets, but not the whole thing. Yes, she does mention having 3 bites of a steak, but along with that, she has rounded out the meal with wonderful and healthy items. Yes, she does scoop out bagels, so that she has more room for the healthy stuff! She explains again and again that this approach to eating prevents the wild animal attack on the ice cream bowl at midnight mentality. Further - I, for one, am glad for her reminders of what an insane gluttonous society we live in - especially as people around the world starve. It's embarrassing, and I'm glad she points readers towards a more healthy and planet friendly eating style. Being short on time (as many people are) I appreciated her chapter success approach to her ideas. The diminishing return concept has already helped me a great deal! This book is my own new bible in terms of motivation.
Good Recipes - Good ideas Oct 28, 2009 I'm a big fan of Bethenny Frankel so I bought the book to see if her method for staying thin and looking great would work for me.
She has some good ideas and they work, but they require an incredible amount of discipline and perseverance. My favorite part of the book are the recipes and her guide to assembling easy lunches for a busy life on the go. I keep the book on my kitchen counter for reference I use her ideas that much. I like Bethenny's writing style, its light, fun and very personal. I enjoyed the book a lot.
Common Sense Oct 26, 2009 What this book really comes down to is common sense. Eat smaller portions, eat mostly healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains), but also eat what you want to in moderation. I never "knew" how to do that before. I've always thought that the only way to loose weight would be to count every calorie and cut out sugar and other "bad" foods.
I've spent years dieting off and on to loose weight but would always give up because I felt so deprived all of the time. My latest diet was Nutrisystem, and it does work if you stick to the plan, but I don't like the food and eating the same thing over and over again got very tiresome very quickly. And I realized that once I got to my ideal weight that I would still have to diet to maintain it, and thinking of a lifetime of dieting is depressing to say the least! With this new way of thinking/eating, you can eat what you want, not count calories and still loose weight. It's a lifestyle, not a "diet". I wanted fudge today, so I ate some fudge. Last night I wanted ice cream so I ate some ice cream. Of course I didn't stuff my face with it, I just had a small amount, but you can eat what you want and not feel deprived. Like she says in the book, "there will always be another meal".
I lost 5 1/2 pounds in the first week after adopting her principles, and I've quit obsessing about food, which I've never been able to do before. I think it's because for the first time I realize that there will always be another meal, and I can finally eat anything I want to and not feel deprived. A cookie or a piece of cheesecake won't ruin my diet. She encourages you to eat what you really want to eat, because if you don't you'll probably give in later and eat too much.
Some of the negative reviews are leaving out important information. A lot of people have commented on her story about only eating 3 bites of steak, but they didn't mention that she ate other things along with that steak. She's not anorexic and this book does not teach anorexia. It teaches how to eat a normal amount of food, which I think our society has forgotten what that is, because of the huge portions that are served everywhere.
Don't expect to drop huge amounts of weight very quickly, it's more about eating right for your body and letting your body normalize as well as your ideas about food and eating.
