An amazing book, definitely recommend Nov 04, 2009 As a 17-year-old female, I can say that this book was just amazing. I think that most of it dealt with the unusual premise of the story. The ending made me cry, but I can understand why it was written that way. Beautifully written, would definitely recommend to women of all ages.
Couldn't put it down. Oct 31, 2009 This book is amazing. I am not a big reader but I escaped into the world that Picoult created, put everything else on hold, and read it in a weekend. I haven't seen the movie and don't think I will. The book was wonderful! I highly recommend it.
Powerful, emotional, riveting. Oct 29, 2009 This is a very controversial story; a 13 year old Anna demands her parents and goes to trial for her medical emancipation. She has been genetically designed to fit her sister Kate's needs (Kate suffers from a very unusual kind of leukemia) and has been expected throughout her life to donate tissue, bone marrow, blood, you name it... and now her mother expects her to donate one of her kidneys to Kate.
Sara the mother of three and Brian have had it rough yes we can all understand their suffering but do they have the right to neglect their two other kids in favor of their sick daughter Kate?
Does Anna have the obligation to risk her own health and her own life to save her sister? Where is the fine line between what is legal and what is ethical in a situation like this?
We won't find any correct answers here, this is a struggle where no one can win and in the process you will find yourself rooting for Anna most likely but let me tell you, the ending will shake you to your core, you will cry if you are sensitive because there are no winners and the life of these tormented characters is as real as it can get.
I enjoyed the way the book has been written because you get to hear the different voices of all the important characters depicted in the story and you feel you are getting to know them better and better.
This is the best book I have read of Jodi Picoult as of yet. Prepare yourself for some surprises.
Great Foundation, Awful Execution Oct 27, 2009 Picoult sets up a fascinating framework for a very complex, heart wrenching story. The parents of Kate, who has a rare form of Leukemia, with a high mortality rate, are determined to have another child who would be a genetic match for her. They conceive Anna, who has spent her entire life donating parts of herself to keep her sister alive.
At thirteen, Anna is expected, in a last ditch effort, under a highly unlikely successful outcome, to donate one of her kidneys to her sister. Instead, she sues her parents for medical emancipation.
Most of what follows is predictable. However, the ending is so bad, and could have so easily been avoided, that it is unforgivable. If you read this book, stop reading it after the judge has rendered his decision. If you can't resist finishing it, and you're as annoyed, as I predict you will be, read several of the other somewhat negative reviews afterwards, and realize you could have been spared your grunts.
great book! Oct 26, 2009 One of the best books I've read. The characters are easy to relate to and the story was very moving.
