Jews come of age Dec 15, 2008 There was something engagingly casual about the Silver Jews' early albums which spanned a decade of barely constructed music wrapped around solipsistic lyrics. The effect was fun, but the music was scarcely worth replaying more than once or twice unless your irony receptors were turned out.
This time out, it seems that someone actually cares about how things sound. The band may consist of actual musicians and the lyrics now engage us on a both a narrative and allegorical level. The comparisons to Leonard Cohen (which always seemed far-fetched to me) are more apt and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.

A disappointment.. Nov 20, 2008 As a huge Silver Jews fan, this album rates as a disappointment.
I've had Natural Bridge for over a year and still listen to it at least once a week.
I've had American Water for 4 years and still listen to it about twice a month.
I've had Bright Flight for 4 years and still listen to it about once a month.
I've had this album since it came out and haven't listened to it since those early days when it was new, except for brief trials to make sure that yeah, it really is that bad.
The production is horrible and the music and lyrics aren't up to the Jews usual standards. That being said, it still gets 3 stars, because even a dud Jews album is worth hearing, but unlike the others, this one doesn't keep drawing you back.
One of the best Nov 16, 2008 Davids on a roll and i cant wait to see what the jews will come up with next!

Surely a Strange Victory Oct 09, 2008 Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea is the latest release from The Silver Jews, and in my opinion it's the most consistent album released by David Berman. Like all SJ releases, it contains the typical amount of sly resignation and witty slacker-sophistication from an eternally sobering songwriter. Berman laments the fate of the suffering jukeboxes in happy towns, country restroom on the radio, the illicit exploits of lard connoisseurs, the importation of squirrels and chicken-fried pigeon in preparation for the onslaught of autumn, and most importantly, the gooey, candy-coated imprisonments we willingly and routinely place ourselves in.
The Silver Jews is a branded band made in the mold of all the current under-the-radar greats such as Neko Case, Giant Sand, Calexico, The Handsome Family, etc. Slightly dark, weird and esoteric? Absolutely, but certainly the music is original, imaginative and with that distinctive southwestern / alt. country flair making it anachronistic enough to be cutting edge.
I daresay that this album may be enough to propel the Silver Jews just beyond their typical squirrelly fan base, but probably and regrettably not enough for mainstream play. It's a shame, since Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea really is a strange victory.

Check your Prescription Mr. Berman Sep 30, 2008 King David has elected to leave his indie throne to be a happy as hell motivational speaker, in this new age of crisis. Doubleplus Ungood.
