3Should Have Been Better  May 12, 2006
Paddy Casey was discovered busking on the streets of Dublin armed with only an acoustic guitar. His shy, unassuming nature comes across on this, his second album. It is an acoustic-pop affair with a little bit of techno added to some tracks. (the techno bits just don't work and become irritating). I have heard these songs 'live' and 'stripped back' to just acoustic and they work much better...Nevertheless, there are some gems in here like 'Saints & Sinners', 'Bend Down Low' and 'Lucky One', that are worth the price of the CD. It took 4yrs between his first album and this one, so this really should have been better...

3Some good tunes, shame about the production.  Jun 27, 2005
At his most appealing Paddy Casey is like a slightly less talented David Gray, a tuneful and capable songwriter no doubt, but one who doesn't quite plumb the depths of emotion that his countrymen Gray and Damien Rice can reach.
Maybe it's a little unfair to compare him to his contemparies - Paddy casey is, after all Paddy Casey, it's just that I can't shake the nagging feeling that I've heard this sort of music done better in others' hands.

On the whole, Living is actually a pretty decent album, albeit one that is compromised by overproduction. The cheesy vocoder (think Cher) in 'Dont Need Anyone' ruins an otherwise good song, and the ghastly dance/pop of 'Miracle' sounds like a latter-day Simply Red knock-off. Elsewhere, particularly in the middle section of the record, cluttered arrangements attempt to dress up weaker material. Those are the negatives but there are also plenty of positives too. The stirring 'Bend Down Low' is a song that would do Van Morrison proud, while 'Lucky One, 'Saints & Sinners' and 'Self Servin' Society' are not only pleasing on the ear but also have something to say.

Who knows, with a more sympathetic producer on board Living might've been something really great - as it stands it's something that's just 'good'.

5Irish Talent   Apr 29, 2005
I have recently discovered Paddy and love Saints and Sinners also released as a single in UK, yes anyone can be a star, (words from the song) yes anyone if you're Jordan flashing her ****
But Paddy you are mulitalented and the lyrics are so right in there with irish contempory folk. I wish I went to Bar-Fly to see you in Liverpool when you played there, I couldnt make it..bet you were a wow! A great album and single.

4Good stuff  Apr 29, 2004
Paddy Casey's first CD, Amen: So Be It, was really well done. Mr. Casey (an admirer of the similarly multi-talented Prince) wrote the music, lyrics, and played the instruments. Here, on Living, he is joined by a group of excellent musicians and a very present producer. The result is a strong framework for his new stuff, but one that lacks a singular voice. Also, a few of the songs feature really clumsy lyrics ("Just get in your car / we can go and be a star") that stick out like bad acting in a high school play.

However, the CD as a whole is eminently listenable. The first three tracks are particularly strong--wonderful pop songs with great melodic hooks that linger for days. Casey seems to have left the busker/poet/songwriter thing behind, but Living is a great new statement for him. I'd love to hear him do these live--Paddy Casey: Unplugged. Enjoy!

5Listened to the first track and was hooked!  Mar 31, 2004
I was in HMV in London and listened to this one, and I was blown away. Since I am from the states I cant find good stuff like this. Its a combination of John Mayer with David Gray and the voice of Bob Dylan. My favorite track is Lucky One. The lyrics just draw you in. All his songs have different beats to them and that is hard to find these days. He experiments on each track. The whole CD is wickedly awesome and even phenomenal. Gotta own this one.
