Must-have for Nirvana fans Nov 23, 2009 Watching Nirvana: Live At Reading is both awesome and sad at the same time. Awesome because the performance rocks. Sad because the show is so good it reminds us what a terrible loss it was when Kurt left us. It also reminds us how much better they were than all the bands who came after them in the 90's. They still stand high above all other 90's grunge bands.
As for the show, the set-list is nice and broad, not just covering Nevermind, but also hitting good parts of Bleach, Incesticide, and even In Utero, despite the fact it had not been released when the concert was performed. In fact, one thing this show does for me is to give me a new appreciation for Bleach. I've always overlooked it in the shadow of Nevermind, but the Bleach cuts here do themselves justice against the rest. In fact, I would say the blistering "School" and "Negative Creep" are highlights of the show and are better suited for Nirvana's 'loose' performances than their more melodic counterparts from Nevermind. The covers of 'The Money Will Roll Right In' and 'D7' fit nicely into the encore as respectful nods to the bands who inspired them and to the punk spirit that informs their performance. There are some great off-the-cuff moments too, like their doing 'More Than A Feeling' at the beginning of 'Teen Spirit', and Kurt's prompting the audience to scream, "We love you Courtney".
On the negative side, I agree with the other reviewer who complained about the inserted cheers. It sounds ridiculous and bothered me enough to make this a 4-star product versus a 5. Also, the Cd is not the best live album ever. But if you're like me and will only listen to it cranked up in your car, then it's worth the buy to get the deluxe version. Either way, the DVD is a must for any Nirvana fan.
Spinetingling, Electrifying, Vital Nov 20, 2009 I recieved the cd/dvd as a gift in the mail last week and finally got a chance to properly view the dvd with the sound raised to capacity but of course, it's Nirvana. Not to sound generic but I was completely enraptured by this performance from beginning to end, floating on the waves of power only this band can produce live. This concert is an absolute landmark release, solidifying Nirvana's legendary status.
An essential document Nov 15, 2009 If you like Nirvana, then you must own this. On DVD, vinyl, CD, or all three. The DVD of course is the most essential component of this release. You simply have to see this performance. They absolutely tear through their hits and their back catalog, including the brilliant cover of "The Money Will Roll Right In" by Fang. Nirvana were the best in the business.
Make sure you do better than your TV speakers when you do play this. And make sure no one is trying to sleep in the house.

One of their best live performances, poorly remixed. Sad but true folks. Nov 12, 2009 The DVD is a must buy, very good performance uncut. but the cd? no.
Honestly, It's to bad because this is a great show, but the big wigs got their hands on it. Sadly, this release is the result of very poor mixing. Whoever was in charge of this release should honestly be looked at like "what were you thinking?" They added fake crowd noise before every single song. Annoying yet somewhat acceptable. I first read about the crowd noise before my purchase and agreed it was still worth a listen. I entered the CD in my player and hit play. Wow, I first was just blown away by how terrible the audio quality is. It sounds like a low bit rate digital media file with a added constant low hiss. I have a high quality audiophile setup, I really enjoy hearing the highs/clarity in my music. Yet, I cannot fully enjoy this album because of the sheer Low-Fi sound it has. I understand this is a live recording however that is not what I am talking about. I have heard bootlegs recorded with a stage mic that had better sound reproduction than this. It has a 'Mono' sound to it, it sounds very one layered and muddy. Also, all the enjoyable banter/messing around was removed from the release and only the songs themselves remain. I will definitely not be buying this on vinyl and will still look for the bootleg version. I am glad they released the DVD quality video, but really disappointed by the audio mixing done for this release.
I recommend just buying the DVD or DVD/CD release (if the price is right). Reason being is that I only had to pay $2 extra to get the cd thrown in with the dvd and to me, It was worth the purchase even if I had known the cd was a disappointment.
The DVD is great, so much new footage. They did a good job on it. You will be really happy to see this performance. I was.
Wow Nov 12, 2009 Unlike the CD this has it all. I was blown away by the sound and what an awesome show. It makes me realize how bad most of today's artists are.( For that type of music) Things really have changed. It became cool to sellout and everybodys does it nowadays.
