The Greatest Session Show Lands Again, Rest Asure, You'll Be Blown Away Nov 12, 2008 If you've never heard a cover from BBC Radio 1's The Live Lounge, then you're abusing your ears, because you're depriving them of such greatness. How great is it? It's so great because not only does the session's best song appear on this compilation, it also happens to be one of the best songs of the year, overall. Penduluum's cover of Coldplay's "Violet Hill" simply blew me out of my seat. It's rock, electronica, a mixture of something else. Whatever it is, I'm totally digging it to China. It can be found on YouTube, but you really have to listen to it at full sound quality to get the full effect of it.
But that's not all! The Pigeon Detectives return for a catchy cover of "Ready For The Floor." The Automatic gives a great pop/rock take on the rap hit "Love In This Club." Paramore puts to good use of their talent in "Love's Not A Competition," which was the perfect song for them to do. Dizzee Rascal puts a little racial spin on "That's Not My Name." McFly sings "I Kissed A Girl," and actually makes the song very listenable. Sam Sparro also gives a pleasant performance of "American Boy," and he does surprisingly well with his rapping. Newton Faulkner and Guillemots also deserve honorable mentions.
And where the compilation has failed in past years, this time there's actually some great acoustic versions of artist's singles. Lupe Fiasco does great outside of a studio, giving a very mellow yellow performance of his hit "Superstar." "Alphabeat" also slows down a bit with their eternally happy hit, "10,000 Nights." The Wombats also translate well to the acoustic setting.
And while there are a few missteps and boring/forgettable numbers, this is just too big of a gold mine to pass up. Hopefully, The Live Lounge can come to American and spread the word around, because ears everywhere are demanding it!
