Percussion ensembles tend to be self-limiting -- there's only so much you can do with rhythm and timbre if your sustain is a given. Ensemble Bash supersede these limitations by including bass guitar and some spoken vocals along with their marimbas, vibraphones, xylophones, drums and percussion. Their styles (plural) derive equally from traditional Ghanaian/Zimbabwean folk drumming (the likes of Dumisani Maraire and the many ensembles derived from his teaching) and contemporary percussion explorations such as Evelyn Glennie. The ancient/modern dichotomy is intentional, as are the extremes in timbre between bass marimba and sleigh bells. Ensemble Bash, though not likely to be mistaken for radio-friendly music, sound like they have a lot of fun and they'll give your stereo a good workout.
