Joy into horns Nov 21, 2009 Great new album. I've been following them since I got hooked on Phish in mid '93 at the Murat theater show (Indiana). This album is one of their best because it highlights each member's talent and persona in a compilation that's all about creativity. This is what they have always been about. I'm glad to see that the band has been able to recognize and harvest the rare and amazing chemistry this band will always have together. It certainly shows in their music.
If there was ever an album that lent itself to horns -- this is it! Love to see them incorporate horns into some of the upcoming MSG and New Year's shows. Wish I could be there (Trey -- please send me tickets!!!).
Just remember ... it's all about Waves!
Pleasant Nov 12, 2009 This album is packed with pleasant music. Sometimes, a little dull, and never really intricate or surprising, like some other Phish music has been. I like it OK, though. As a longtime fan, I'm a little disappointed, wish the writing could have been a little more ambitious, more interesting. My favorite two albums are Rift and Nectar, for reference. This one is more like Farmhouse, which I actually learned to love, so maybe it'll be the same with Joy.
Only major complaint: the lyrics. I'm not usually a lyrics person, unless they're really good. If they're bad, I usually don't notice or care. But on this album, oof. Just corny, right out of the pages of a jr high schooler's journal. Don't know if Marshall wrote them, but I prefer the old mishmash of hippy-trippy imagery to this.
Pros: The production, best of any Phish album yet. Just a really good mix. Also, the singing. When it comes to vocals, Phish's reach has always exceeded their grasp, writing intricate harmonies their voices could never quite pull off. And Trey, not really a singer. Thats OK by me, I don't listen to Phish for the awesome singing. However, on Joy, Trey's singing seems to be in tune a lot more of the time, like he's improving, and the harmonies get nailed a surprisingly high percentage of the time.
I can't compare this record to Rift or Nectar, it's not in the same league. But I guess it's nice enough to have on in the background while I'm working.
Not horrible Nov 10, 2009 Just a quick review from a long time Phish fan. This disk is the best since Farmhouse but mediocre at best. You'll like a few songs but probably wont listen to it start to finish for the rest of you life.
Welcome back! Nov 06, 2009 I'm suprised by the wide disparity in the reviews - seems Joy is shaping up to be a loved it/hated it kind of album. With high expectations often comes disappointment. I didn't have high expectations for this record, so I'm not let down like many here are. It's a safe record, good for a comeback album.
Best tracks: Time Turns Elastic, Twenty Years Later, Sugar Shack (yes, the lyrics don't make a lot of sense, but it is really catchy after a few listens), Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan.
The more I listen to this record, the more it grows on me. It is a warm-up for the new future of Phish. I will have high expectations for future albums, and I don't expect they will disappoint.
Great return! Oct 31, 2009 I'm quite surprised by the # of 1 star reviews. This album is really good and flows pretty nicely actually. For a bunch of older guys getting back together after a 5 year break, I think this is a perfect return for them. Clearly they didn't try to write their best album ever. I think they all said "what have you written lately?", and then took each others songs and recorded them. I think their next album will be the whole band writing together again. But don't listen to the people that say that this album is bad. That is BS.
