A Classic Prine Performance On DVD For The First Time!

For 35 years, John Prine has been writing, singing and recording amazing music. From his self-titled debut album in 1971 to his recent Grammy Award-winning Fair And Square, he is a true songwriting hero to his fans and peers. Discovered by Kris Kristofferson and covered by everyone from the Everly Brothers and Dwight Yoakam, to Bette Midler and 10,000 Maniacs, his original sound and affecting lyrics have given him a kind of stature and longevity uncommon in the music world.

John Prine's appearance on the prestigious PBS concert series Soundstage, offers his fans a real treasure. Included in his set list are the early classics "Angel From Montgomery" and "Hello In There," as well as songs from his signature album, Bruised Orange. We also get a rare and intimate look at John in his hometown of Maywood, Illinois, where he takes us to the actual scene of "The Accident," and then, to the back porch of his childhood home, where he performs "Paradise" and "How Lucky." All of this, plus performances with special guest Billy Lee Riley, document the authentic and natural genius of this singer-songwriter.

1I'm sure I'd like it but...  Dec 28, 2009
I live in the US but when I loaded the DVD into my DVD player, I got a message that it could not be played in Region 1. That's never happended before. I've requested a replacement from Amazon but am not optimistic abouit being able to play the replacement. Very odd.

5Live Prine.  May 18, 2009
The sound quality on this product is horrible -- BUT, there are so few John Prine videos available, that I am still extremely happy with the product. It's interesting to see a younger Prine performing - though he hasn't changed with age, except maybe to get better. Interesting glimpses through dialogue into the history of some of his best songs. Strongly recommend this product.

5Perfect  Apr 06, 2009
I saw John Prine's Soundstage performance back in the day. I'm thrilled to have it in my collection.

3A great performance lost  Feb 01, 2009
There are glimpses of the possibility of a great video of a great artist, but to my regret, most of it is lost in a very poor sound mix. There is only one other DVD of a Prine performance that I am aware of, so I purchased this with great expectations. Perhaps someone will "find" the sound and reissue this.

3NOT THE ESSENTIAL  Oct 05, 2008
THE SOUND QUALITY IS POOR AND JOHN IS PLAYING AN ELECTRIC GUITAR DURING THE LIVE PERFORMANCES. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE DVD IS WHEN HE IS SITTING IN HIS OLD BACKYARD IN MAYWOOD ILLINOIS SINGING AND TALKING ABOUT HIS OLD HOMETOWN AND HOW HE GOT THE IDEAS FOR SOME OF HIS SONGS. HE TAKES YOU ON A TOUR OF MAYWOOD IN AN OLD CAR. I CAN DIG THIS PART BUT THE LIVE TRACKS PRETTY WELL SUCK. I CAN SAY THIS BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN JOHN AROUND 7 TIMES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. PRINE IS AT HIS BEST WHEN HE IS ONSTAGE BY HIMSELF, ACCOUSTIC GUITAR BEING HIS ONLY INSTRUMENT. THE LOUD BAND FORMAT JUST DOESN'T WORK FOR ME. HE ALSO LOOKED LIKE HE WAS COPPING QUITE A BUZZ ALSO. BUY IT FOR THE DOCUMENTARY, BUT NOT FOR THE LIVE SET.
