4Beautiful memories...  Oct 07, 2009
If you want to know what the early 70s were like, this album is for you. Before disco, before Saturday Night fever, there was ...John Denver.

This album reignites beautiful memories for me. In early 1972, I was an enlisted woman in the Air Force, stationed in San Antonio. There was a memographed (anyone else remember the smell of memograph fluid?) announcement up on the bulletin board in the Enlisted Club, about a small music club downtown that had a young artist playing for the weekend. They used his real name, Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., and mentioned that his dad had been stationed in San Antonio. There was no cover charge (important when you only got $120 a month salary!), and you could catch the bus from Lackland. A small group of us went. We thoroughly enjoyed the music, all of us being the children of the 60's and loving Peter, Paul, and Mary, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, etc. Three weeks later, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" hit the radio, but we couldn't figure out who this "John Denver" was until he actually did a gig on "Johnny Carson" (I think), and mentioned his real name. We all remembered that night. He was such a nice guy when he came around to all the tables during his breaks. From then on, I collected every album -- and still have them on vinyl. This gives me the opportunity to have some of my favorite songs of the 70s in my CD collection!

5Memories of Ski Trips to Colorado  Aug 04, 2009
I was fortunate as a kid to be taken to Colorado for ski trips on spring break. The drive from Texas to the Golden State were filled with the sounds of John Denver. This eight track tape was the soundtrack from those times.

I've owned this CD in the original pressing, and now the new remastered version, and boy am I glad they remastered it. I still hear a little tape hiss, but nowhere near like on the pervious pressing of the CD.

The main reason for my wanting to review this collection doesn't have much to do with sound quality, or even the addition of a few bonus tracks that weren't on the original CD, but to highlight this collection's version of "Leaving, On A Jet Plane."

Since this album is my memory of what John's songs sound like, this is the only collection with the 1967 version of the track that I've found. Each other collection I've come across has a version that was released / recorded in 1969.

You can tell in the first few seconds of the song that they sound totally different. The vocal inflection is different, the tempo is faster on the 1969 version and the track lengths are different. 4:05 for the 1967 recording, and 3:39 for the 1969 recording.

Since I don't have a lot of information on the 2 version, I can only suspect that the '67 version was done pre Peter, Paul & Mary having a hit with the song, and the 1969 version was recorded after they had the hit. I prefer the 1967 recording, and that's the main reason I'm glad to have this remastered version of this CD.

5John Denver  Jul 08, 2009
This is only his early work. I wanted Annie's Song too but that was later in his career. I was so anxious to have a John Denver album, I didn't read the songs too carefully so I didn't get the song I really wanted, but that just means I get to purchase another of his great albums!

5Timeless!  Jun 17, 2009
These songs have been following me since I was a little girl, and I love to give in to their melancholy once in a while. And I don't care if anyone around me think it's redneck music!

5John Denver's Greatest Hits  Mar 26, 2009
Love this CD. There are a few add ons to the original album, but the album itself was just the best of his early work. "Follow Me" is not found anywhere else that I could find, and it's a beautiful song.
