Description:

In a career that spans nearly four decades and includes gigs with Return to Forever, Rite of Strings and a variety of other solo and collaborative projects along the way, bassist Stanley Clarke - one of the most prominent voices in electric jazz and fusion - had seemingly covered every possible corner of the jazz landscape. But there was one avenue he had yet to explore.

"I had never done an acoustic bass record, ever," he says. "There's a long list of people on whose records I've played acoustic bass - Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson and many others - but I'd never done an acoustic jazz trio record of my own. So I wanted to record one that would just feature the piano and the acoustic bass in a way that you could really hear the bass."

This long-overdue dream project becomes a reality with the release of Jazz In The Garden. For his first straightahead acoustic jazz trio recording, Clarke assembles two brilliant collaborators at the top of their respective games: pianist Hiromi Uehara and drummer Lenny White. Each represents a distinctly different generational and cultural perspective, but given the range and versatility of both, the net effect is superb. Indeed, the synergy resulting from all three of these luminaries makes for one of the most refreshing Stanley Clarke recordings in recent years.

In many ways, Jazz in the Garden is Stanley Clarke's way of reconnecting with a time much earlier in his career before his plunge into electric jazz - a time when he earned his stripes playing acoustic bass with some of the most enduring names in the annals of jazz. "There are times when you want to revisit the things that really established the foundation in your life," he says. "I spent many, many years studying acoustic bass, and many years playing in New York after I left Philadelphia in the late `60s. I played with everyone who was there at the time. It was a long time ago, but all that stuff from that period is what made me who I am. This record is my way of reconnecting with that time and that music."

5Great music  Nov 19, 2009
The music played here is wonderful. It is great to hear Stanley and Lenny teamed up in this setting.

5Wonderful Hiromi and Stanley  Oct 14, 2009
This is a wonderful album by Stanley Clarke and band members. Clarke's upright playing is distinctive and Lenny White is superb as well. Most of all, though, it is Hiromi who gives the greatest satisfaction, for here she is playing straight-ahead jazz and finally doing what I've wanted to hear her do for years. If only she would drop the techno-jazz she's been playing and concentrate on music like this!

The double-LP set sounds absolutely superb and surfaces are, though not perfect, quite acceptable. (I needed a replacement copy.) Highest recommendation!

5wow! this is great  Oct 08, 2009
this is undoubtably the best jazz trio cd iv"e purchased in the last ten years or so, possibly because of my admiration for hiromi. well young lady you placed yourself with some great talent and i"m sure you enjoyed playing with them, you fitted in as easily as placing a hand in a glove, great jazz suits you, i love it and am not taking anything away from your partners in this endevour. you are a very talented group, we can only sit back and hope for more ef the same in the near future, well done, would love to increase the star rating higher if it were possible. the very best of luck to the three of you as time goes by

5Mr. Clarke at his very best.  Aug 08, 2009
I have been a fan of Stanley Clarke for over thirty years, since his work on "Light As A Feather". I am always excited to hear him play. This album certainly stands up to my expectations of Mr. Clarke. I believe his playing on acoustic (upright) bass far surpasses his talents on the electric bass as incredible as he is on that instrument. It is "jazz majesty when Stanley teams up with Lenny White, it doesn't get much better than this duo. It is good to see that Mr. Clarke has a taste for the rising new talent in jazz, I love the work that Hiromi contributes to this recording. Wonderful collection of tunes that are well executed. Love it!!!J. Michael Salley

3Good But Not My Cup of Tea  Jul 31, 2009
This album is very well done. I am a big fan of piano trios; in fact, I have a Listmania of jazz trios here on Amazon.com. To me there is too much Stanley and not enough Hiromi, i.e. too many bass solos and not enough piano improvisation. If that appeals to you, but this. I, however, will most likely never play my CD of this again.
