Description:

A sweeping, 30-track career retrospective that leaves almost nothing out, Live is a much more filling meal than the two-part Best Live series, each of which contains 12 tracks. Fans will want one or the other of these packages, and will need no further elaboration on their merits. But those who just want a sampler of Taylor's hit songs might want to check this out as well. The best greatest hits package, Classic Songs, is an import, and costs a premium. The domestic Greatest Hits was compiled in 1976, and misses later tracks. It also features rerecorded versions of some of its songs. This is a better value than the import and offers a better selection than the domestic sampler. --Gavin McNett

5JT at his best  Dec 26, 2008
I have owned this CD for several years and just recently bought another one for a friend. I have seen James Taylor 4 times live, and this CD makes you feel like you are at a concert. Both discs are full of a variety of his material over the past several years. If you have ever seen him live, you know that he puts a little extra twist on some of his classic songs when he performs them at a concert. Great CD and a great price considering it is 2 complete CD's.

5Great Range of Songs  May 20, 2008
For James Taylor lovers this set is heaven. The two CDs have a great variety of songs. There are JT's time honored favorites but then a few that aren't heard normally. However, the quality is unmatched. Even the backup singers for James Taylor have an unbelievable degree of talent. Some of the solo performaces will knock your socks off!

5James Taylor - Nails The Versitility Of This Unique Artist  May 07, 2008
This is a two CD live album with a whopping 30 tracks that cover all facets of Taylor's career up to the early 90's. Backed by a 9 piece band the album really showcases the versatility that a Taylor live show encompasses. When one thinks of James Taylor it is usually the single guy with an acoustic guitar that you think of, but live Taylor really puts on an energetic show with a wide variety of music. Taylor has always had an element of soul to some of his stuff, and with the backup band and especially backup singers this album injects a significant amount of soul influence into the several tracks. All the big hits are here along with some of Taylor's better album cuts. For me one of the highlights is the inclusion of the song "Milworker" which was written for a musical and not on any official Taylor album. The song is one of the best he has ever written and for anyone who has ever worked in a factory environment pretty much nails what day to day life is like. I don't have any of Taylor's studio albums so for me this collection is a great overview of the many facets of Taylor's output.

5A true gem  Jun 30, 2007
There have been very few albums -- read two or three -- over the years for which I have been compelled to write a review. That being said, this album is obviously one of those albums. Literally every single song is incredible. I came upon this album by chance, only turned onto it because of "Mexico," which I had stuck in my head at the time. I knew my parents like JT, but I figured I could give him a try too. I listened straight through both CDs once I got the album, and I honestly was blown away. I realized just how many JT songs I had heard my whole life and never known the artist, and I realized that those same songs contain some of the most intricate, delicate, and moving guitarwork I have ever heard. Each time I listen to the CDs -- and it's almost permanently in my car's stereo -- I find new things to appreciate about the songs. The words tell amazing stories, glimpsing pieces of JT's own life or narrating others'. Either way, you CANNOT go wrong with this album. The music and lyrics will both stand the test of time. James Taylor truly is music for all generations -- both timeless and timely (check the relevance of the outro on "Traffic Jam"). Buy it, download it, whatever; you owe it to yourself to find this album.
