Description:

On their eponymous 1989 debut, the Indigo Girls followed the lead of such greats as Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers pumped social conscience and self-esteem into ringing acoustic anthems like "Closer to Fine" and "Land of Canaan," just in time to catch the rising tide of feminist rock. Occasionally rough and a little too self-conscious, the songs on this CD resound with a profound sense of honesty and raw emotion. Crisp guitar work and haunting harmonies became the stock-in-trade of this powerful duo of "girls with guitars." L.A. Smith

5Timeless socially-conscious folk-rock   Mar 23, 2009
I first heard this album way after they won the grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Recording some 20 years ago. Dismissed them as a hillbilly duo till some friends gave me their 1992 album 'Rites of Passage' as a birthday present.

I dropped my misgivings, gave the disc a spin, and I was immediately convinced I've stuck gold! I very swiftly went on to get all the Indigo Girls releases I could get my hands on, including this one, and the rest, as they say, is history. It was only last week that I caught them 'live' for the very first time, and they were briliant!

They performed gems like 'Closer to Fine' and 'Kid Fears' from this album among other equally stellar tracks from their 10 odd albums over an amazing 20+ years together.

The edgy trawl of Amy Ray's raspy voice and rockier compositions are a surprisingly fine complement to Emily Saliers' more mellow tones and tender offerings like 'Love's Recovery' and 'History of Us'.

Even as I ponder over what it is that defines the lasting appeal of this premier folk-pop group, I find that 'the less I seek for some definitive, the closer I am to fine'...

4Definite improvements in gold and re-mastered editions  Jan 19, 2009
When I saw a review here bemoaning the "guitar noises" on the gold edition, it reminded me that some people can't hear sonic improvements because they don't know what to listen for.

I've had Indigo Girls in my headphones since "Closer To Fine" broke nationally, and can absolutely hear smoother mastering work here; it's that extra shimmer in a cymbal, the "air" in between the players which gives you a real sense of the room they were playing in, and yes, the details in fingerplay that goes beyond just reproducing the notes of the guitar. These "Mastersound" editions are the best fidelity you can expect to hear on Columbia albums, akin to the Mobile Fidelity and DCC re-masterings, and, if you've heard the two excellent SACD treatments of later Indigo Girls albums, you know Emily and Amy do have an appreciation of recordings that goes beyond just interpreting a song in a dead space.

I also have the re-mastered version of this title from the series they did the same time of their 2-disc retrospective, and although that remaster does some tricks (such as opening up the soundstage with audio cues placed further to the left and right, and bringing out more pronounced backup parts and fills), it's still a bit crisper than this warm version that is sourced from the first-generation master.

If you're familiar with the album, try this edition on a nice stereo, and prepare for a subtle sonic upgrade on a folk classic.

5classic indigo girls  Mar 24, 2007
this is an essential introduction to the indigo girls for the novice listener. the music, lyrics and beautiful harmonies are classic IG and foretell greater things to come (which, of course, did.) "love's recovery" has become one of my all-time favorite tunes over the years and it is as fresh today as it was when i saw this pair in concert many, many moons ago. "prince of darkness" is likewise timeless. these ladies each have their own distinct musical styles and the beauty of their music is how the styles "mesh" into harmonious musical delight.

5Great  Nov 04, 2003
Their voices are powerful and the harmonizing artistic. Hard to believe voices and acoutistic guitar is all that they needed to make such a fun and fantastic CD.

5KS95-FM Radio, Minneapolis  Mar 09, 2001
A few years back, I bought this CD from only a recommendation by one of the KS95-FM Minneapolis radio morning DJ's that I liked a lot (male, pre the Van Patrick & Cheryl Kaye days, possibly ... unless it WAS Van?). He said that this CD still today remains his very favorite album of all time.I took a chance, knowing NOTHING about the IG, and I was so pleased. This is an outstanding CD that spins in my CD player often.Hey, if somebody knows who that male DJ was because you heard him say it too ... or Mr. DJ, if you read this ... please identify who you were; and THANKS! I'd really be curious to know who else is on their favorites list!Just bought Rites of Passage. Not nearly as impressed with it so far, as I was with the first release by IG, but I have to give it time to grow on me.Buy the first IG CD. You will not be disappointed. It gets my highest rating of being a PT ("play through") CD!
