Glorious glorias Sep 02, 2008
This is one of the most exquisite recordings I've ever heard. The two sopranos Emma Kirkby and Susanne Rydén, both baroque specialists of world renown, are joined by the Bell'Arte Salzburg to perform truly glorious music of great beauty. From the very beginning of the CD, one is drawn by the delicate strength of the instrumentalists as they treat the listener to Vejvanovsky's "Sonata Laetitiae in C". This is followed by the duet "Ich verkündige Euch große Freunde", in which the seamless match of the two voices shows us the kind of glory that is rarely encountered in one lifetime.
I do not think I have ever heard a better vocal blend for baroque vocal work than Kirkby and Rydén. They both have a similar pure glimmer in the centre of their voices, a similar vocal attack to each line, and a star-dusted shimmer as though the Christmas Star were blazing through both of them with liquid incandescence. These are two of the world's best in baroque singing, and their love of the music they are singing, combined with their similar techniques and respect for baroque singing style, make their performance truly glorious.
Beautiful, beautiful music, beautifully performed - faultless, exquisite and radiant. This is definitely not just for Christmas: it is so lovely a recording that I find it hard to stop playing the CD after repeated listening.
