Amerie is BACK and it's her time to shine Nov 15, 2009 Amerie is the most underrated singer to come out this decade. She simply doesn't get the RESPECT she so obviously deserves despite having some mega-hits throughout her career. Amerie possesses what I like to call TALENT and CLASS. Her voice is unique and unmistakable. She's carved out her own vibrant sound which has been flat out stolen by countless singers. That's ok though, because with the help of her new label DEF JAM she's looking to make a bigger impact and once and for all show everyone how it's supposed to be done.
It's been a while since she's released an album in the states. Her third album, Because I Love It, is going for a whopping $44 on this website which is ridiculous (as much as I love Amerie that is simply out of the question so get it used from one of Amazon's vendors). Regardless, her previous albums have all been well worth a purchase and repeated listens spawning classics such as Touch, One Thing, Why Don't We Fall In Love and That's What You Are. IN LOVE AND WAR follows right where her last album left off.
There's plenty of superlatives to describe Amerie's sound whether it be vibrant, aggressive, stylish, unorthodox etc. One thing's for sure....it's refreshing. Amerie is the primary songwriter and there's not much flaw in the songwriting (nothing tacky, corny, or outta place). The songs I'm feeling the most include Tell Me You Love Me, Heard Em All, Higher, Why R U, YOu're A Star, Red Eye, and Flowers. Only the man up above knows why You're A Star is only an interlude.
There's a few high profile producers such as Jim Jonsin, Bryan Michael Cox, and Teddy Riley but the rest are relatively unknown. There's beautiful imagery and artwork in the booklet (when I buy I expect a good booklet too..what can I say?) and it includes lyrics to 4 of the songs (if you can read that handwriting).
Amerie has delivered on her 4th album In Love And War and while not quite a classic is a very good record that you should add to your collection immediately especially if you're a fan and even if you're not a fan and just want to get familiar with her. 4 stars.
"In Love & War" is a pretty solid effort Nov 14, 2009 Amerie returned in 2009 with her new album "In Love & War" on a new label- the iconic Def Jam label. She released it after the fallout with Columbia Records when her previous album "Because I Love It" was denied release in the United States. On her new album, she tries to experiment with different sounds- namely funk, rock and Southern bounce. As with any experimentation, there are misfires. The songs "Heard 'Em All", "Dear John", and "Swag Back" sound like material that was better suited for the likes of Ciara and Keri Hilson. The rock infused "Higher" is a good idea that was badly executed being that the song tends to meander the whole four minutes. On the positive side, she comes with the good stuff. The album opens with the Teddy Riley produced "Tell Me You Love Me", which doesn't sound like the typical Teddy Riley song. The Fabolous duet "More Than Love" is an excellent uptempo song that warrants a few listens. However, the best songs on this album are the songs that are just screaming to be singles. The Trey Songz assisted "Pretty Brown" ia an obvious contender as well as the Bryan-Michael Cox produced ballad "Red Eye".
Overall, she has proven that she can make good albums without her longtime collaborator Rich Harrison. Amerie's problem, for the most part, has been lack of promotion. At Columbia, she seemed destined for greatness- until former Destiny's Child member Beyonce decided to embark on a solo career, which took the wind out of her sail. Now at Def Jam, she's playing second fiddle again- this time to her labelmate (and Def Jam cash cow) Rhianna. Having L.A. Reid executive producing this album isn't helping her case either, as he is known for exercising poor judgement (see: the first two singles released from "In Love & War"). Despite a few missteps, I recommend Amerie's new album.

The true Defenition of "UNORIGINALITY" Nov 10, 2009 This album is so TYPICALLY R&B, There are no surprises in this batch of GENERIC songs. "In Love & War" sounds exactly like anything else she's released. Her album's have always been very CONSERVATIVE. This is truley a BORING album with no tricks or treats.
Amerie has been singing about the same boring subjects since she came out in 2002, Only difference is that her debut album was actually GOOD, And her singles have always been decent for the most part. Everything on this album has already been done by someone else including herself.
R&B music as of late has been drab, predictable, "same" and dull. "If you've heard one, You've definitely heard them all". Amerie, (Like Mya) are stuck in a box, They do the exact same things over and over and over. Every song from each album are interchangeable, You can't tell which album you're listening to because they all are close in sound and lyrics. Hitting the same tired notes again and again, The only thing that ever changes is the year and the artwork.
(Someone gave this CD to me)
Amerie DESERVES her PLATINUM STATUS! Nov 10, 2009 What can I say!! Amerie has done it AGAIN with her fourth album. Unless you are a TRUE Amerie fan then you wouldn't begin to understand her music. Amerie has a unique and different style of her own in the R&B game that too many people don't have. Being a fan since day one, she has ALWAYS delivered! Forget what you have heard!
Here are just some of my 2 cents of her HOT and BANGIN platinum status "In Love & War" opinions:
1)Tell Me You Love Me = A hot, funky, horn-blowing and up-beat intro that reminds you of the days she was with Rich Harrison. This song is sure to have you rocking to the beat and getting your diva on! A reminsce of "Gotta Work" part 2 from her 3rd album.
2)Heard 'Em All = CERTIFIED BANGA'!!!! This song is so crazy and hot that your speakers will smile at the bass thumping thru them! I love how she has the Indian-inspired chants and her diva-ish with attitudish-type swagga going on! This is one song that is a true Amerie-who-is-not-afraid-to-be-different song! Just HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3)Dangerous = Amerie brings back the funky beats of the 70's in this song. A nice get up and groove song.
4)Higher = Another 70's flashback sound with her rock-type persona. This song would surely remind you of some of her songs on her 3rd album.
5)Why R U = OMG! I love love LOVE this breakout single for her fourth album! It starts off with an ol'skool DJ scratch and makes you fall in love with her sweet melodic voice. Now this is a Amerie CLASSIC that takes you back to her 1st album "All I Have". Trust me on this.
6)Pretty Brown = HOT!! The intro is so sick with a taste of the old Mint Condition meets the new age break down "ooooh...ooooh...ohhhhh"! The collabo with Trey Songz was perfect! Amerie delivers again with her high-pitch signature during the chorus. Another reason this album should go PLATINUM! Sing it Amerie and Tre!
7)More Than Love = Another hot track that rocks! Has a rock meets R&B type-hype to it.
8)Swag Back = HOT!!! Love how she brags "..now I got my SWAG BACK"! Amerie steadily holds notes in this song making you feel her how she feels since she got her "swaggg back"! Another song sure to be on repeat. Hmmm. I can also hear a remix with T.I in there Amerie! An NO this is NOT Fiona Lewis....AMERIE it be!
9)You're A Star = A bangin' interlude that I am sooo mad wasn't a song. I love the whipping-effect and outer-space voyage effect(keyboard of course) experience in this song.
10)Red Eye = OMG! OMG! OMG! This song is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! So dreamy, eccentric, aphrodisiac-ish, s

11)Different People = At first you will think this is Jay Z's "Song Cry"...NOPE! This song will have you thinking and have you in head-knod-mode with the hot beat and piano playing on key.
12)Dear John = Wasn't really feeling this track. I would've preferred her to make "You're A Star" instead of this song.
13)Heard'em All (remix) = See above! Hotttttttttt with Lil'Wayne in her corner.
So, forget what you heard and GO BUY THE ALBUM!! Amerie is a true R&B diva with her own unique style, her own unique voice and her own unique way of making music. A true fan would understand! PLATINUM STATUS!
