Description:

Nasir Jones made this debut album at the age of 20, already armed with the calm perceptiveness and been-there-done-that attitude of a much older ghetto vet, though sometimes his inner callow youth shows itself. Illmatic is a look back at a life spent in the culture of the projects, acknowledging joy as much as pain and taking note of violence as a fact of his environment rather than a focus of his life. It's enlivened by Nas's kicky, deep-threaded multiple rhymes--you can tell he grew up listening to Mr. Magic's rap show and internalizing the secrets of everybody's flow--and by tracks from a bunch of all-stars, including the Large Professor, DJ Premier, and, most memorably, Q-Tip ("One Love"). --Douglas Wolk

5Nas The Great!!!  Oct 14, 2009
Illmatic is one of the best albums of all time!!! Nas is a true poet, and his lyrics are sick. This album is hip-hop in it's truest form. My favorite songs on this album is "represent" and "The world is yours." I miss music like this people, music that means something and you sit through a whole album without skipping to a next song. You can sit through an album and just vibe nodding your head. Nas to me is one of the greatest rappers of all time. If you dont believe me people, listen to the lost tapes album by Nas. I reccomend this album to everyone, Illmatic is an example of the essence of hip hop.

5This album should be #1 on every hip-hop list.  Sep 29, 2009
This album is flawless top to bottom. The greatest rap album in history.

Lyrics flow with the music. The pace is persistent, expressing New York life as a relentlessly persistent force. The beats feels like the march of a soldier's drum.

Not only was this the first album to attempt complicated internal rhymes, but is STILL the best at it.

This album, in my opinion, is the greatest triumph of the English language, both creatively and structurally. Better than Shakespeare.

5Nas - Illmatic  Jun 05, 2009
What more can I say that the other 500+ reviews or so havent already?

This album isnt just a classic, but a masterpiece. Rakim took lyricism to a new level with Paid in Full, and Nas did it again with Illmatic, though in a different way. Ra did it with pure technique. He was writing very complex rhyme schemes that just made perfect sense and his flow was second to none at the time. Nas's technique was equally dope, but he took it a step further with his story-telling abilities. Upon first listen, this might just sound like another typical NY street album, but unlike other similiar albums of the time (Enta Da Stage, Ready to Die, Infamous, etc), Nas paints a picture of urban despair that points in the direction of uprising over his harsh environment rather then glorifying it.

The production of course is outstanding too, with LES, Pete Rock, Premo, and other top producers of the time delivering the goods. "NY State of Mind" is one of Premos most famous and grimiest beats ever, the beat alone gives you the feeling of a nightmarish environment with a wicked piano loop to accompany it. Memory Lane is more upbeat and pays homage to his roots and upbringing. But the standout cut for me is "Life's A Bitch" featuring AZ. A's verse was so dope people couldnt wait to hear a full album from this guy, and the beat is just unbelievable...very slow and heavy, with a beautiful trumpet done by Nas's father that makes it seem like you are standing right there with Nas atop the projects in QB, just looking at the NY skyline. I can go on and on about how sick this album is, but there is no need really. This is, simply put, one of the all time great hip hop records. Even if you are only a casual rap listener, this one is essential for the collection.

5Hip Hop in its truest form.  May 04, 2009
One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, when Nas dropped Illmatic in April 1994, it was like he dropped a bomb on the whole rap scene, and helped put the East Coast back on the map. This album is perfect from start to finish, no wasted space whatsoever. Every track on Illmatic is awesome, but the main ones that will draw you in will be "One Love", "The World is Yours", "It Ain't Hard to Tell", and "N.Y. State of Mind". Also Nas has some of best producers in hip hop collaborating with him on Illmatic: DJ Premier, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and Large Professor. All in all, Illmatic is not just one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, its one of the greatest music albums of all time, period. Nas at his absolute best.
