Wow, This Is So Hot, Why Did I Hesitate So Long? Aug 11, 2009
Modern acoustic blues just don't get better than this. Want to hear some butt-kicking blues finger-picking? Here it is. Kaukonen's playing is sparkling and yet has that bluesy edge to it: Not TOO perfect. The tempo-breaks are amazing; these guys were locked-in. The fact the they could do all this live is amazing. The remastered recording sounds really great. You get to hear how good a bassist Casady is as well. Scarlett's harp playing is very good as well.
When I listen to Kaukonen's playing on this record, I'm torn between too strong urges: One to go home and woodshed until I can play some this stuff; and the other to go home and burn my guitars cause I'll never get there. Kaukonen need take a backseat to no one in finger-picking blues.
This is (truly) great music. The music is old to begin with; These renditions are just as great and relevant as the day they were recorded. If you like blues, this record must be in your collection. To me this sounds seminal: The peak sound of the white boys playin' the acoustic blues and doing their best to sound like the old black fellas in the Delta (and elsewhere.)

Amazing how much enjoyment can be derived from so few instruments. Two guitars and one harmonica - recorded live as well, presents a musical feast for the soul. This recording is a timeless classic. Must be heard.

If Jorma could actually sing, this would be one of the most perfect blues albums of all time. His voice is just too thin to be believable as a blues singer. His guitar work, however, is wonderful!!!! Jorma plays as though he has four hands. The real star of this CD, though, is Jack Casady. What a magnificent bass player!!!! He is like a great jazz bassist. He never really intrudes on Jorma's playing, but at the same time, you can never just ignore him, either. Jack has the perfect placement of notes to add to what Jorma is doing on guitar. I know it would be impossible to do a blues album without singing, so I can't fault Jorma for trying, but the main point to listen for is the wonderful instrumental interplay between guitar and bass. If you love blues, buy this CD, put up with Jorma's weak vocals, and revel in the great instrumental work.

Tuna was my 1st concert that my big brother and the singer in his band took me to see underaged at The Lisner in D.C...Just got this cd in the mail today and forgot how great these boys are!! Excellent Excellent Album...Full on 5 Stars, right down to the broken bottle in Uncle Sam's Blues

Jack Casady on "Hot Tuna". Yeah, Jorma is amazing, and this is a solid 5 star effort. Some evening, however, put this one on and just listen to the bass playing, and his interplay with Jorma. Mind-blowing. It's cliche to say it, but no collection is complete without this one.
