 REO HIGH INFIDELITY Dec 07, 2009
Turn a deaf ear to these people trying to be critics by only saying the negative. If you want a CD that you can listen to from
front to back without ever having to skip a song, this is it! Great beat, great instrumentals, a favorite for any music collection.
Back in 1980/1981 every car had the cassette of "REO Hi Infidelity" and "ACDC Back in Black" in it.

This mini-lp replica sleeve (mlps) version of REO Speedwagon's best album is a mixed bag in some ways. As far as mlps designs go, this is one of the best that I've seen using good quality thick cardboard assembled very well looking like it will stand the test of time without coming unglued and is a stunningly accurate replica of the original vinyl. Also included is a fold out black and white poster of the band with all the lyrics in both English and Japanese included as well. The sound quality unfortunately although an improvement due to the remastering is highly compressed and so is dynamically lacking to some extent and the album tracks sound a lot better than the singles which is probably due to the state of the overused master on the latter tracks making this mlps version overall to be an average in terms of sound quality.
The band is named after a fire engine and as far as "Hi Infidelity" goes very aptly so as this album speeds on as if to a fire and is extinguished before you even know it clocking in among the shortest albums in my sonic library. Still, it is a rock 'n' roll firehouse and tracks like "Keep On Loving You" (very well crafted pop song) hold a special place in my heart as being among the earliest tracks that I can remember from my tweens when I started to really get into listening seriously to music as a hobby which has now become a lifetime gig for me. Tracks like that and especially "Take it On the Run" (great guitar solo) made me want to play rock guitar in a band and so I'm grateful to the band for being among the first bands in giving me the impetus to do just that eventually. Incidentally, if you are a beginner, "In Your Letter" is probably the best way to practise your strumming and chord changes being made up of simple chords and strumming patterns too; I know it worked for me.
Overall this is an album of its time and was a big hit because its timing was right coming out at the time of punk and new wave when people were turning away from long drawn out disco and were choosing much much shorter tracks stripped down to the bare bones and that's what you get here: short, sweet unadulterated rock and roll plus a couple of slow rock ballads.
For those who can't understand their music today all I can say is that you had to be there. I just wish that the sound quality for this mlps version could have been a little better in what is otherwise an excellent mlps version of REO Speedwagon's best ever and most commercially successful album.

"Infidelity" would prove to be REO's most successful album spawning several huge hit singles and sitting on top of the album chart for a multitude of weeks. Although the public seemed to love it, for older REO fans this one was a huge letdown. REO had been toiling away for years in the Midwest (this is actually their 11th album), before this thing broke the dam wide open. "Don't Let Him Go", "Keep On Loving You", "Take It On The Run", and "Tough Guys" were all top 40 hit singles, and pretty much everything else on the record was played on AOR radio. The singles were so overexposed that even if you liked them you got sick of hearing them so much. Of the album cuts "Shakin It Loose" is a cool rocker and would have fit right in on the "Tuna Fish" album, and the final closing power ballad "I Wish You Were There" is decent enough. Overall though I don't this album holds a candle to the best of their earlier works. It remains an all time classic for some people, but I just barley give it 3 stars.

The rest of the album is enjoyable, but the 45's that came out it are great. "I Just Want To Keep On Loving You" is a CLASSIC & worth the price of the album alone! I believe this is the best REO Speedwagon has put out.
The Essential Album From REO Speedwagon Oct 10, 2007
Released in early 1981, this album shot REO Speedwagon to the top of the pop music charts. Despite having limited success earlier in their career, this album established REO Speedwagon as one of the top bands of the 1980s.
Blending powerful ballads with excellent rock-and-roll, "Hi Infidelity" has something for any music fan. The disc opens with the hit "Don't Let Him Go", a song which REO has used to open their concerts for years (and they still do today!) Up next is the #1 ballad "Keep On Loving You", which features Kevin Cronin's excellent vocals and piano. Also included on the disc is the top 10 hit "Take it on the Run", "Tough Guys"-complete with an intro. from the Little Rascals, the up-beat "Out of Season", and Bruce Hall's "Someone Tonight".
This album's popularity has remained high for over 25 years, and REO still sounds as good today as they did when this album was released. I recently saw REO in concert, and they can still rock with the best of them.
I give this CD my highest recommendation. Kevin Cronin is superb on lead vocals, and Bruce Hall, Gary Richrath, Alan Gratzer, and Neal Doughty on bass, lead guitar, drums, and keyboards, respectively, give REO a unique, driving sound. Listen to this CD and hear some great rock and roll from one of the supergroups of the 80s (and today).
