5Old album, great songs  Dec 26, 2008
I rediscovered this CD when looking for the song "The Story of My Life". It's a great album. and of course that song blows me away. I gave one as a gift to someone who recently lost her husband and she said she cried all the way through it. He's a remarkable singer/songwriter!

5Very Good Neil Diamond CD from the 80's  May 30, 2008
I just purchased this 1986 Neil Diamond effort and I found it to be an enjoyable collection of 1980s adult-contemporary pop, with the synth-heavy title song,a pair of EW&F's Maurice White-helmed tracks("Stand Up For Love" and "Angel"),the David Foster-produced power ballads ("The Man You Need" and "It Should Have Been Me",the latter written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance) and the lovely "The Story Of My Life" being the highlights. It may not to everybody tastes, especially for those who prefer his early work, but most Diamond fans should add this to their collection since its pretty cheap($6.99-7.99).

2set the record: musically  Dec 18, 2007
I've been a Neil Diamond fan since the late 70's. During the early 80's I, went back in time and discovered his earlier albums from the 60's and 70's and I was hooked. After buying his albums from that early period, I lost interest in his new material. There was an obvious creativity that waned in the latter years, with the exception of SEPTEMBER MORN, which I love and the film music concept of THE JAZZ SINGER, which I also found interesting.

Then one day, I re-discovered DIAMOND with his most recent albums, dating from the late 90's till the present and I was happy to hear some great new recordings! I even discovered going back to the 80's, the album: THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, which I also loved. So in the spirit of re-discovery, I started to collect his albums from the mid 80's to the early 90's, so I may one day finish my collection.

Neil Diamond has been on a new creative wave for ten years now. But if I look back there have been some uneven periods from 80's to early 90's, which brings me to my review of HEADED FOR THE FUTURE!

I'm going to break it down with each song and you decide if this is worth dishing out dough! I will mention CHORD PROGRESSIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS often. So for those EASY LISTENERS, I've included a DICTIONARY.

chord progressions= changes of mood in melody or obvious change of direction, which is done with the harmony of chords.

arrangements= the kind of instruments used and how they are played together for harmonies and rhythm.

HEADED FOR THE FUTURE: Has an ambitious chord structure, reminiscent of the opening of THE JAZZ SINGER. It's a strong opening for the album.

THE MAN YOU NEED: One of the strongest vocals I've heard from DIAMOND. This is a simple melodic song by DIAMOND and DAVID FOSTER.

I'LL SEE YOU ON THE RADIO: Co-written with BACHARACH, it has the Bacharach signature and is arranged with interesting harmonies.

STAND UP OR LOVE: Overly-produced! That was the 80's! Written by EARTH, WIND AND FIRE'S, MAURICE WHITE is not an inspired song. It has some great chord changes on a musical break within the song and some fun, exuberant background vocals. My least favorite.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME: A strong ballad written by BRYAN ADAMS. The rock edge, suits DIAMOND'S voice.

LOST IN HOLLYWOOD: The music is written by genius STEVIE WONDER and accompanied by genius HERBIE HANCOCK. The melody is great and beautifully written with great chord progressions! But the instrumentation is AWFUL! 'WHA' HAPPEN'?? Well that was the 80's, where anything 'went' and 'came'. At least the 80's were influential in so many other musical ways.

THE STORY OF MY LIFE: A beautiful ballad written by DIAMOND.

ANGEL: This song has a better instrumentation than most songs on the album. It's a breezy melodic tune, reminiscent of early DIAMOND.

ME BESIDE YOU: Another song co-written with BACHARACH. This also has the Bacharach signature. It is a well arranged melodic song with nice chord progressions.

LOVE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE: It is a well-written ballad with some interesting changes in the melody but the arrangements are un-even, like the ALBUM.

THIS IS NOT AN INSPIRED ALBUM AND IS UN-EVEN, but it does have some good listening between tracks.

4for die-hard fans only  May 12, 2007
Love Neil Diamon but this is not one of his best.

Great songs especially "The Story of My Life". Very powerful song. The other songs are equally as good. Neil Diamond just has a special way of sending a message by song.
