Description:

Anita, Bonnie, Jean and Ruth Pointer formed their eponymous band in Oakland, California in the Seventies and proceeded to draw quite successfully upon a remarkably wide variety of musical influences, from Tin Pan Alley to funk to country. The Pointer Sisters were clearly a band in transition at this point. First of all, their contract with Blue Thumb had come to a close, and sister Bonnie was planning an exit for a solo career. The record starts off with an energetic cover of the Sam Cooke hit from which they took the albums name. Stevie Wonder contributes a song, Sugar Bring Your Sweet Stuff Home To Me, that sounds as though it could have come from his Fulfillingness First Finale / Innervisions period. Ray Parker Jr, legendary Funk Brother James Jamerson, Wah Wah Watson and Stevie Wonder all guested on the disc as backup musicians, and Sonny Burke, long associated with Frank Sinatra, contributed arrangements. Despite all this firepower, the album failed to yield a pop hit, as nearly all their previous records had. It might have been that they hadnt fully embraced the disco sound that was sweeping the radio in 1977 (though they would, and with great success). In any event, this is one of the unfairly-overlooked releases in the Pointers catalogue, and its reissue is long overdue.

3Their Most Funky R&B Album !  Dec 08, 2007
The last Pointer Sisters album as a quartet [ with Bonnie ] is their funkiest album . They stopped doing the old jazz numbers & clearly went in a hard r&b direction with producer David Rubinson. It's a short album with only 7 songs. The best are I NEED A MAN { Anita sings lead }, DON'T IT DRIVE YOU CRAZY { Bonnie }, and two leads with Ruth : WAITING ON YOU [ with steel drums on this track ] and LONELY GAL. All these songs have incredibly funky bass lines, wah-wah guitar & all-star soul sessionmen playing on them. Another great song is BRING YOUR SWEET STUFF HOME TO ME written by Anita & Stevie Wonder , and is a welcome less funkied number that sets it apart from the frantic funky pace .

I never liked their version of the Sam Cooke song HAVING A PARTY with the noisy arrangement & laughing, and it doesn't sound any better with time. I'LL GET BY WITHOUT YOU is sung by Bonnie , but it's overly repetitive and not nearly as good as the other mentioned tracks. Hip-o-select issued this album as is, with no liner notes or bonus tracks. They should have put on their rare single LIVE YOUR LIFE BEFORE YOU DIE on Blue Thumb from 1975. The Pointers wrote it and it was a mix of country, soul & pop, reaching a lowly #89 on Billboard. This would have made this CD complete, and been a welcome addition to the short song selection. Not their best, but a step towards doing only contemporary music & freeing themselves from the old 40's look & songs they did before. Next step would be as a trio switching to rock oriented songs with their fantastic album ENERGY and their huge hit FIRE.

5An Underrated Classic in The Pointer Sisters Catalog  Aug 18, 2007
The reason 1977's Having a Party failed to launch had nothing to do with the talent and energy of the Pointer Sisters as they sound more alive and soulful than ever on this lost masterpiece, but rather the circumstances surrounding the group at the time were so oppositional with their contract finishing at ABC/Blue Thumb and sister Bonnie feeling so pressed for a change that she soon embarked on a solo career. Changes did take place as Having A Party is the recording where The Pointers turn into absolute disco divas just before the music would catch the masses. But those at ABC and Blue Thumb were never fully supportive of the Pointer Sisters changing their sound and image and desired to keep them producing the 40's style jazz era with cover songs to boot. Anyone who understands the Pointer Sisters and their love for all styles of music could see how that form couldn't last forever. Following 1975's Steppin', an album where the sisters began to drift towards a more funk groove in their sound, Having A Party is a landmark recording that was in step with the times and could have easily taken the popularity of The Pointer Sisters to new heights. Unfortunately, Rubinson and those at ABC wrote off this album resulting in the first incarnation of The Pointer Sisters to cease. If nothing else, fans of dance and disco can still enjoy the songs rather than pondering too much on what could have been.

5Under-rated 70s Soul/Funk Masterpiece On CD At Last!!  Mar 20, 2007
This is how I first knew of the Pointer Sisters. This was bought for my birthday when I was 12. I love this album. I remember I'd just seem then in 1976's Car Wash and they relesed this album shortly afterwards in 1977. I loved the wukka wah wah soul funk sound. I associated it with background music in Starsky & Hutch. Songs like I'll get By Without You & Don't It Drive You Crazy leap of this album in all their wah wah glory. Although I continued to buy all their music over the years, it was this album, Steppin and BreakOut that remain my fvourites.
