Description:

Happenstance…the never can be…

Main Entry: hap·pen·stance; Etymology: happen + circumstance: A circumstance especially that is due to chance. - Merriam Webster Dictionary

I apologize for insisting on writing my own bio, but I just can not be satisfied with another’s account of my psyche when even I don’t understand it myself. Welcome to the world of this indecisive control freak hopeless romantic…

Happenstance, produced by John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews etc.), is a collection of songs inspired by my obsessions, often love related, but not always. It’s about the battle between chance circumstances and the belief that everything happens for a reason. The title and the back cover addition of ‘the never can be’ suggest that I’m not really endorsing chance, but, in fact insisting that there must be a reason for repeated broken hearts – perhaps a promise of a better situation, learning experience, the greater love etc. It’s a circular argument… and it’s merely a matter of ‘happenstance’ that the title is what it is anyway. Without the hopefulness of reason, how could anyone weather the highs and lows of relationships and this delightful junk called love.

Look to the second album for a more cynical approach in which it all goes to hell and nothing makes sense and chance is winning…

4would love to hear her at a cocktail lounge  Oct 27, 2009
Some really nice tracks with quality sound, both vocal & instrumental. Some tracks take acquired taste.

5Beautiful music, voice, lyrics...  Aug 11, 2009
I saw Rachael Yamagata during the 2004 Austin City Limits Music Festival. I had no idea who she was nor did I have any idea about her music. I remember standing in front of her for about 45 minutes enjoying her music.

I recently thought back to that day at ACL and looked online for her CDs. I purchased Happenstance and have fallen in love with her music and her voice. I enjoy sitting in my car and listening to this CD. Her voice is so amazing...it's strong and yet it doesn't overpower the music. Her songs cover all the different moods...sad, happy, nonchalant, angry....it's such real music.

I recommend this CD to anyone who's sick of mass-produced music and wants something to remind them of how music is supposed to make you feel.

I truly enjoyed this CD and am sure that if you're anything like me, you would too. Thank you Rachael for coming up with some great music :)

5Better than Norah  Dec 29, 2008
If you are a fan of Norah Jones, you will enjoy this CD. Rachel Y has the same type of voice as Norah but adds more piano to her sound. Very soothing and relaxing - you can have this on as background to a dinner party or have it be the spotlight of a special night - either way, Rachel Yamagata is a phenomenal musician.

5rachael, this one's for you  Jun 14, 2008
Hi there, Rachael. I hope you read your own reviews occasionally. I just got back from a trip where I saw a guy I had a thing with years ago, and the thing is still there. I've had him listen to some of your music (esp. Track 14. does it have a name? where is it here? well, at least I've got it) and no way could it ever affect him as it has me, but, well, maybe I'm wrong.
When I read your bio I thought, yep, control freak hopeless romantic, that's me too, only without the beautiful voice and the musical ability. But you have put very eloquently and heart-wrenchingly into words every thought I've ever had after every relationship gone wrong, and I just want to say thanks.
And if you're someone out there who's just lost her (or his, I guess) true love and you're looking for the perfect cathartic song, I unconditionally guarantee that you'll find it on this album. Heck, you'll probably find several. Which, unfortunately, is why I keep returning to it again and again.

5Not enough adjectives  Jun 01, 2008
The really hard part about trying to describe what's so good about Rachael Yamagata's CD 'Happenstance' is that there just aren't enough words to say it all adequately. It's an eclectic mix of songs to start with, from soft and heartfelt to powerful and passionate, all tied together by Ms. Yamagata's amazingly versatile vocal talents. The lyrics are honest and real but also elegant and even poetic. The music runs the gamut of styles from rock to blues to jazz.

Here's a few words to try of for size: sensual, strong, strident, sad, soft-spoken, surprising, soulful, striking, sexy, surreal, sweet.

Try any of them on, they all fit. And that's just the S-words.

Whatever words I choose, however I try to say it, in the end all I'm really trying to say is this: 'Happenstance' is a fabulous collection of songs for a very talented musician. I simply love it.
