solid perfection Nov 02, 2006 i keep coming back to this record. over the years it has really held up as one of my favorites. great vocals, brilliant songs.
Thank you Amazon - I found my favorite 1999 song! Nov 16, 2005 I have been searching for the song "Yeah Whatever" for a long time. I couldn't remember who sang it and what the group was. Knew I liked Vertical Horizon at the same time, went to them on Amazon and Splender was listed under "Customers who bought this CD also bought..." and then I listened to the tracks. I was SO happy. This is one of my all time fav songs and I just purchased the whole CD - it sounds really good!

One of the Greats Nov 24, 2004 One of the first cds i bought, all because of "yeah, whatever" being on the radio. It was a cool song and i got the feel for it. Back when i got this album, it was the time period where i was too young to acknowledge great music, besides the radio songs. I put this cd away for a couple of years, and one day, i decided to take it out and give it a quick spin. Wow. How could i ever not listen to every song on the cd. I started listening to this cd 24/7, and didn't get sick of it once. This album is just incredible. Every single song is incredible, not one is mediocre. I can't believe that there hasn't been a review on this album for three years, it shocks me. I guess everyone who has already reviewed it found out how great it was the first time they listened to it. To this day, this cd is still in my collection at the top of the list, and i doubt it will ever move down on the list. If you don't have this cd, shame on you. Shame on you..

Underappreciated Jul 17, 2004 While Splender may not be the most famous of all the late-90's rock bands, it is arguably the best. Led by the talented Waymon Boone on vocals, Splender mixes an edgy punk sound with classic guitar riffs and amazing lyrics to make a truly unforgettable debut album.
Their one "hit" single, so to say, "I Think God Can Explain" shows the true depth of Boone's writing. It also gained the band numerous gigs, including their best - an opening slot on Third Eye Blind's American tour of the time. That and the slight radio play on local stations was how I first became familiar with what would later become my favorite band of all time.
There is a maturity on "Halfway Down the Sky" that is not present on most debuts, no matter what the genre. Combine this with the overall need for a great rock band; a need that was HUGE at the end of the century and you get something that no one will ever be able to top, not even themselves, I'm sad to say. Instead of sticking with what was known, the "I hate my parents - why won't you shut up - this girl is a b!t@h" styles of the punk bands that came before (and after) them, they stick to rock's roots, with head-banging on "Wallflower" all the way to lighters-in-the-air tracks like "London."
It would not be surprising to hear that most people have not heard of Splender, but that fact alone is one of the great "shames" in music. All of the attention from radio and the press does not a great album make (look at Ashley Simpson, for example). The flip of the coin, then, can also be true - that some of the greatest music out there, like Splender's, is left unheard by the public majority just because it didn't fit the mold of the times.
So, overall, if you are looking for a truly great rock album that you will enjoy for years to come, you will not be disappointed in "Halfway Down the Sky."

Pop/rock at some of its finest Mar 14, 2004 It's been about 2 years since I saw this band. I saw them play one song and they were awesome. This band has harder, darker songs, beautiful soft songs, and melodic rockin songs. My favorite songs are "Yeah, Whatever", "Spaceboy", and "I think God can explain". This stuff is excellent if you like bands like Matchbox 20 even though Splender don't sound like Matchbox 20 they have the similar style. Splender sound more like Vertical Horizon, and The Verve Pipe. By the CD.
