Description:

At the end of 1971, George Jones signed a 10-year contract with Epic Records, where Tammy Wynette was enjoying the peak of her career with Billy Sherrill. By then, Jones's hard-country style had fallen out of favor, and in part to soften his clenched-teeth delivery, the producer paired him with Wynette, who rounded her hard, strident delivery with sensuous lower tones. Jones's unconventional style--alternately stretching or biting off the ends of his phrases, and sliding from one end of his register to the other--was hard to follow, and Wynette learned to read her cues in body language. A dipped chin meant he was going for a low note, a tipped head signaled he was aiming high. But Wynette did more than just hang on. The combination made them the President and First Lady of country music during their six years of marriage (1969-75), and their musical partnership took them to the top of the singles charts three times: "We're Gonna Hold On," "Golden Ring," "Near You." When the storybook romance ended, the mood of the duets changed from devoted love to restrained anguish. Every country fan wept. --Alanna Nash

5The Jones and Wynette set  Feb 14, 2004
this GOLD album {the 1977 vinyl didn't go GOLD...it was a combination of those sales and the sales of the CD re-issue that put it over 500,000 sold}. But, this is George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Since when did record sales mean THAT much to listeners and fans? The material on this CD ranges from 1971-1977. George and Tammy enjoyed a streak of hit duets that ran from 1971-1981, the same time span of Conway and Loretta. however, George and Tammy were married and their singles reflected what the public assumed their private life was like. Because the duo could get so personal sounding, many of their songs were written exclusively for them by Billy Sherrill, Norro Wilson, Carmol Taylor, and ironically George Richey (Tammy would end up marrying Richey in the late '70s). Also, because of this personalization of their solo and duet recordings, it sent the sales of their singles through the roof. There are 7 Top-10 hits on here and 3 hits that charted below the Top-10. Unlike Conway and Loretta, the duo of George and Tammy issued singles that would over-lap with solo songs and they eventually fell victim at country radio to what Conway and Loretta avoided: over-exposure to the point that it causes a DJ or a listener to quickly refuse to hear someone again. If you'll notice, a lot of their singles charted lower than their popularity suggested because of the DJ's resistance to play them. For the casual fans not interested in hearing the complete duet hits of the couple, this 1977 album does the job because it showcases all of their classic hits from 1971's "Take Me" to 1977's "Southern California". the only single from the 1971-1977 era that's missing is "Old Fashioned Singing", a gospel song. Their 1980/1981 hits, "Two Story House" and "A Pair of Old Sneakers" are missing of course and they can be found on the Epic release 16 BIGGEST HITS.

5How Can You Go With These 2?  Oct 17, 2002
I own 6 Tammy and George CDs but this is the cream of the crop. I can't explain why I prefer them singing together, but not separately. What a strange chemistry must have percolated between them!. And what was life like at home? High points are "Golden Ring", "Near You", "We're Not the Jet Set" and "The Ceremony". Tammy and George fans can buy this CD without reservation. Country fans unfamiliar with the great, "classic" male/female duets such as Conway/Loretta or Dolly/Porter owe it to themselves to listen to at least one such album. I can think of no better choice than this.
